The Heart of Man

What goes into a man cannot defile him. The religion of the day had morphed so dangerously into a set of rigorous dietary guidelines and ceremonial activities. It had lost all meaning and all power for changing the sinful heart. The rules which were meant to protect them and point them toward God had become the focus and an idol.

We can relate in that our religious activity often forces out personal devotion to God. Church attendance, not smoking, not drinking, not cussing, and not dating those who do has become the main tenants of our Christianity. There lacks power and the personal life giving walk with Christ. In different churches there are different, often good things which push Christ out of prominence whose place should be the center of our hearts.

As Jesus said evil that defiles comes from within us. and if Christ does sit enthroned therein we have little hope of preventing its escape. We can cover it with programs religious activity and behavior modification but the root and source remains seeking a way to grow outward. Let Christ lay the axe to that tree and pull it up roots and all. Then will good things pour outward.
