In Tune with the Lord
As I read this passage I can't help but compare it to the first time Jesus had fed the masses. At that time the disciples came to Jesus with their concerns (and most likely their anxieties) about the situation. He also told them to feed the people. That may have even been a little tongue in cheek on His part. Perhaps he was even showing them their inability to meet their own needs. Nevertheless this time the details are different.
Christ brings to the attention of his disciples His desire for the welfare of His people. Could it be that now they were attentive to the Word of their Lord and were sensitive to His desires? I do not think that this is far from the realm of possibilities. In a similar manner I interpret their response to His concern less as a failure of faith but rather an honest question about how Christ would provide even in a miraculous way.
Now perhaps this is reading to far into the Scripture what isn't explicitly written but we also see that when Christ asked how many loaves they had that they readily had the answer. It is almost as if the disciples, at least in this case, had readied themselves for Christ miraculous provision. They did not have to go and see how many loaves they had for they already knew.
I think that as we walk with our Lord He challenges us to grow in various ways or tests of faith. This was almost an exact replica of the previous challenge only in my opinion the disciples had learned and had grown in their faith. We should expect that as God spends His time growing us into His disciples that He will not be remiss in His lessons for us. Let us learn well and pray in faith and for increasing faith to follow Him.
