The word know here speaks of intimacy as between that of a husband and wife. It also speaks of experience...something that can be experienced in the natural realm.
This type of knowing...intimacy and experience gives knowledge and this knowledge is what brings about the necessary transformation in thought patterns to manifest the freedom Christ gives to His own in any area of need!
A renewed mind is a fortress against the devil and thus the battle waxes hit in this one area above all others...for as one thinks in his heart...so is he!
