Bar-Jesus is Elymas' Hebrew name, and it means "Son of Jesus." Paul, with the force of the Holy Spirit uses this name-insult directly correct Elymas by informing him of his real name, "son of the devil! (vs. 8). Paul identifies Elymas as an agent of evil - a man leading the proconsul astray with false teachings. How fitting it is that Paul's first miracle is blinding Elymas and effectively his false teaching just as Jesus did to him on the road to Damascus. The result is the saving of the proconsul, who comes to see the truth!
