Consequence #4, the most severe
There are four major direct consequences for the sin of worshiping the golden calf. The first three are physical consequences. The fourth is more severe than the first three put together: "I will not go up among you." God removes his presence from the people.
The loss of God's presence is alwaysthe consequence for sin. God cannot and will not tolerate it. From banishing Adam and Eve from the Garden (symbolic of cutting off their relationship, the place where they fellowshipped with God), sin always results in separation from God. Thanks be to Christ, who is called Immanuel, God with us, who restores us to God's presence.
