John, Jesus' cousin was sent to make smooth the path to salvation and I am pretty much certain that when we read these word in the first three verses, people immediately think of a "smooth" carefree life. But this is talking about bypassing the commandments set in place for atonement of sin, the sacrifices, the rituals of preparing the red heifer, the flour, etc. No longer would those who unintentionally sinned have to find "perfect" livestock or birds to atone for their sin.
