I think that we need to treat others as Abraham treats Lot here. Abraham's character was peaceful, against fighting; Abraham said he didn't want the two to fight over land so they should go their separate ways. Also, he gave Lot first choice, knowing before hand which side Lot would pick. An act of Selflessness on Abraham's part. Brownie points for Abe!
