The altar would've been caked with blood..
In less than a week the altar would have been crusting over with dry blood from the amount offerings that would have been brought by repenting Israelites. In the US it seems like we want a nice, clean Christianity, but God doesn't seemed to be concerned with being neat. Christianity is presenting ourselves as living sacrifices, and at the very least, it seems as if God is ok with us getting messy with it.
