"What do you have in your house?

This familiar story illustrates some important principles of the spiritual life.

1. To receive supernaturally from God we generally have to be willing to surrender whatever we are trusting in other than Him and His promises. God is not bound to His laws but generally speaking He waits until we have surrendered every bit of flotsam and jetsam that we cling to in the wild storms of life before He acts to meet the need. When we truly have no other hope in God is when we can expect a miracle.

God loves to take our "nothing there at all...except a little oil." and turn it into an inexhaustible supply of grace. The widow of Zerephath had to make a cake for Elijah first from her hoarded supply of meal and oil before God would release His miracle of supply. Jesus could have easily fed the 5000 with a Word but He waited until the boy came forward with his five loaves and two fish. He never asks of us what we don't have but does require the little that we do have, especially if in our heart we are clinging desperately to that rather than in God and His promises.

According to Jesus' own testimony, in the eyes of God the widow who cast her last mite into the Temple treasury cast in more than all of the rich men combined who contributed out of their wealth.

Are you desperate? have you truly come to the place where there is absolutely no hope but in God and His promises? Look up! Your redemption draws near! The stage of your life is set for a miracle, a supernatural intervention of the living God!

Father, we thank you that our extremity is simply Your opportunity to display You miracle working power in such a way that no flesh may glory in Your Presence. Father, reveal any area of my heart where we are trusting in anything great or small other than You and Your Word. We acknowledge these things as idols that offer no real hope. We relinquish our desperate clinging to these unworthy things and by faith lean our whole trust in Your unfailing promises and the tested character that stands behind every one. You have promised! I believe it! That settles it! In Jesus' Name! Amen!!
