What gods?
"When all the other gods have come together, the Lord God judges them and says:...."
My first thought what gods? but when you read later what he says to them, it becomes a little more clear.
"How long will you keep judging unfairly and favoring evil people... Be fair to the poor and to orphans. Defend the helpless and everyone in need.... Rescue the weak and homeless from the powerful hands of heartless people."
Could God be talking about governments? Could he be talking about people in power? I think so.
I struggle with the commands of the bible regarding the poor and helpless, weak and homeless because it's really hard to separate them from the wolves in sheep clothing. I have a heart, and I have compassion, but I also have a sense of justice. I hate seeing those who live off the backs of others, demanding that they be taken care of, when they refuse to do anything for themselves. That is not poor and that is not helpless, that is lazy and arrogant. I feel for the orphans everywhere yet here in our country, the rights of the parents are often considered over the welfare of the children and parents who should never have children are entitled to them as if they are objects. The foster care system and adoption system are appalling. Not to say that there are not wonderful people involved but the corruption and evil goes deep. And instead of looking for ways to fix our system, people look elsewhere for children to adopt. Rescue the weak and homeless... This perhaps is one of the hardest for me to understand. We have soldiers who have fought for our country living on the streets and mentally incapable people living off the streets because there is no where they can go. Yet our government takes great care to fund and offer places for refuges and immigrants (illegal and otherwise). It's not a political statement, it's a statement of fact. The government is made up of people with agenda's. What was started for good, can be used by evil people for their own advancement. But looking closer in the mirror, if we are honest, everything that God has asked of us should not be a government problem. If we loved our neighbors as ourselves, if we took care of the widows and orphans, if we did exactly as he said earlier, it would not be an issue of a government program. We (as in the follower, as in the church) have failed in what we need to do and the government has stepped in. Without the leadership and guidance of God, it is destined to be corrupted.
Little gods are not capable of doing what God can do. And while we sit back and complain, we still do nothing. God will judge us and it will matter none which political party you are in, whether you are a sheep trying to help or a wolf taking advantage. God sees and judges us each by our actions. Today look at what you can do. It doesn't have to be big, it can be small but take the first step today to do what God is asking us to do.
