Calling to God from the Bottom of a Pit

What can a child of God expect when he or she cries out to God from the bottom of a pit? This little 8 verse Psalm tells us. The writer says:

Verses 1-2 “Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord.” Whatever the circumstance, whatever the trial, whatever the burden … no matter how awful and deep the pit ... this is what to do.

Jer 33:3 Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.

Heb 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Verses 3-4 So very often, when we call upon the Lord, our need has risen out of our own sin and foolishness. But, we need to keep in mind that our great God specializes in sinners and their foolishness. What did this Psalmist find out about God in that department? He says here, “But there is forgiveness with thee…”

God has not changed, beloved. We too have this same assurance… no matter what we have done or what we have gotten ourselves into. As you have it in 1 John 1:9,

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Or, as we have it in our Lord’s own words … speaking through Isaiah the prophet...

Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.”

Verses 5-6 In times of trouble, this great saint ran to the Lord and, then, waited on Him and hoped in his Word … with all of his heart. This is the only place to be,

Isa 40:31 But those who wait on the LORD
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.

Verse 7 Let’s think on two words in this verse … mercy and redemption. My, how plenteous our God is in these things. They are his specialty!

1 Pet 2:9-10 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

Eph 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

Heb 9:12-14 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Rom 3:23-24 …for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
