Nicodemus (and Joseph: john ch. 19) were secret disciples of Jesus. They came to him only at night when nobody could see them with Him. They were leaders and Pharisees and public teachers. They shouldn't be hanging out with Jesus, they had the law of Moses to follow! But these two believed. When Jesus revealed to them the secret of being born again, they accepted Jesus as their Messiah. We see that in John ch. 7 when all the Pharisees were looking for a way to arrest Jesus, Nicodemus stood up for him. He did it in a very non-suspicious way, although those around him still saw him as a traitor when they said, "are you from Galilee too? or why are you standing up for him?" Nicodemus didn't say anything else at that time, but we clearly see that he did have a true change of heart when him and Joseph were taking down the body of Jesus off the cross. They didn't care at that point who saw them, or what they thought. They went public with their beliefs.
Public victory comes only when you learn to overcome in your private, everyday life.
Relationship with God is key. A deep and personal relationship with the Holy Spirit. Do you learn from Him when noone sees you (at night)?
