Wise versus Intelligent

"A city without wise leaders will end up in ruin; a city with many wise leaders will be kept safe."Proverbs 11:14 CEV

My son and I were talking the other day about being smart and how it is important that you do your best in school. I wanted to emphasize the need to do your best but I also wanted my son to know that true wisdom comes from God. We talked a little about how schools teach evolution and the big bang theory and how that differs from what I believe that the bible teaches. I told him that it's possible to be intelligent (book smart) but not be wise. Of course to a 10 year old it's pretty confusing stuff. But when I thought about it later, it's exactly what is happening in our world. We have people who are intelligent and have done and prove many things in science and math, but when it comes to true wisdom, they are as ignorant as possible. Their book knowledge in some ways has interfered with their ability to accept what God says which is true wisdom.
This verse brings it home. Whether it's a society, a city, or a country, anytime we depend on our own intelligence instead of the wisdom of God, we will end in ruin. And while I may not be the smartest cookie in the carton, and in many ways am looked on as inferior because of my beliefs, I can trust that the wisdom I get from God, will see me through and keep me safe. Wisdom to me means knowing God. With him, I need nothing else.
