The "His Mercy Endures Forever" Psalm

Twenty six times this Psalm declares, “For his mercy endures forever.” And, with each declaration, an example is given of a particular merciful thing that God has done in history … either for mankind in general … or for his chosen people, Israel, in particular.

Each one of the things cited here is a subject for contemplation. It would be a very rich and profitable spiritual exercise to take each one of these things and ask, “How does this act of God display his great mercy?” ... and then, to meditate on that one thing.

Did you notice, in verse 3, God is called, “the Lord of lords”? In Revelation 19:16 we read that, at Jesus’ Second Coming, he will have this title emblazoned on his robe and thigh,

And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written:
KING OF KINGS AND
LORD OF LORDS.

Make no mistake about it, that Person of the Godhead … the One who intervened in history and accomplished all the things cited here in Psalm 136 … whose mercy endures forever… was none other than the pre-incarnate Lord ... Christ Jesus himself.
