2 reasons for God to give these rules:
1) Natural law: it is right for children to obey and respect their parents.
2) Divine law: God commands it. When Holstein obey parents they also obey God.
Some kids die young regardless of whether they obey or not but generally they will live a long life. Is a child required to obey if the parent is asking them to do something that goes against scripture? No. They are required to honor their parents. This passage refers to young children who are still being shapes and molded. What if the parents don't deserve to be obeyed? Still honor them as parents.
V.4: NLT: Don't make your children angry by the way you treat them, rather bring them up with the instruction approved by the Lord.
Do not ask them to do things that are unreasonable or beyond their capacity. Don't look for faults in them. Be tender and gentle when bringing them up.
Colossians 3:21-do not exasperate...so that they don't lose heart.
If we lose their hearts we lose everything. Do not harshly criticize or lose compassion. Do not set them up for failure by setting unreasonable expectations.
If you feel you are losing their heart ask 3 questions:
1) Have I ever wounded you and not made it right?
2) Is there anything you are angry with me about?
3) Have I ever said one thing and done another?
Dads: surrender any right you think you have to act unreasonably. Bring your kids up in the training of the Lord. Teach them to love and serve God and LIVE IT IN FRONT OF THEM. Show them you love them, God, and your spouse.
Dads: show your son how to love a wife.
Moms: show your daughters how to love a husband.
Let you kids see God active in your life and His rewards in your life from your obedience.
Love and protect the kids God has put under your care.
Our personal, EVERYDAY walk with God will be our example to them. Studies have shown that kids are more likely to stay in church if fathers are the spiritual leaders in the home and go to church willingly, not the mothers.
Ephesians 4:32- be kind to one another.
Protect your child physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
John 10:10-The thief wants to come and destroy your life, marriage, and children.
Show your children how to embrace a lifestyle of generosity. Be a giver, not a taker.
Luke 6:38 if you give, you will receive.
If you are stingy because your parents were stingy, you are robbing God and you are robbing yourself and your kids as well.
How do your kids hear you talk about leaders and bosses? I it respectful? Do they see you praying for people with authority? Stop criticizing leaders in political authors that you don't agree with-PRAY FOR THEM. Don't put it on Facebook. If you are expressing more criticism than prayer-shame on you. Don't bad-mouth people in spiritual authority then be surprised when your children walk away from God.
Forgive! Show them forgiveness. They will watch to see how you process hurt and injustice. We don't deserve grace for our wrongdoings but we get it anyway. Show that to others when they do you wrong. Bless those that do you wrong. Your children MUST see you model this. Bitterness will poison both us and our kids. It's one thing to poison ourselves but a whole different story when we poison our kids. We want God to look at us and say "Well done, faithful servant!" http://glo.to/l?1=49006001&2
