God has all things well in hand when it comes to you and me. This clear and declarative truth recorded here in this Psalm is amazing. Further, its down to earth practicality and application is eye-opening and solid.
The individual attributes of God that apply here could be listed as follows ... He is:
1. Omniscient (all knowing) .. verses 1-4; 11-12; 15-16; 23-24
2. Sovereign .. verses 5 and 13
3. Omnipotent (all powerful) .. verse 13
4. Omnipresent (everywhere present) .. verses 8-10
5. Revelatory (a God who reveals himself) .. verses 17-18
6. Righteous and Just (always does the right thing) .. verses 19-20
7. Good .. verses 5, 10,13,14,17-18,24
Verses 1-6. The first six verses here speak of God’s relationship to his children. His understanding of us is perfect and minute. His work concerning us is all encompassing. Truly, as it is set before us in verse 5,
“You have enclosed me behind and before and laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot fully grasp it.” (Herb Munson translation)
Verses 7-12. I was recently reading a letter from an inmate in prison and he stated, “I have been in this God forsaken place for over 14 years.” Immediately, Psalm 139:8 came to my mind…
“If I ascend up into Heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Hell, behold, you are there.”
God cannot be shut out from anywhere. And, because of that, he is always right there with his children wherever we might be.
Verses 13-16. If there were ever a question in one’s mind about the right or wrong of an abortion, these verses should forever lay it to rest. We human beings are far more than just an egg and a sperm that came together in a woman’s body. God himself is involved in the making and giving of every life. Here are 3 scriptures that come to mind,
Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.Isaiah 49:1
Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Jer 1:5
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world… Eph 1:3-4a
Verses 17-18. Have you read your Bible today? It is God’s revelation of himself, you know. When we read our Bibles, we are sitting at the feet of Jesus. This brings to mind one of the titles of Shaffer’s books ... He is there and He is not silent.
Truly, the Psalmist’s statement here that the Lord’s thoughts are so many they are like the sand of the sea is certainly accurate. Want to get into the mind of God and discover his innumerable thoughts for yourself? Just start reading in the Word of God.
Verses 19-22. Make no mistake about it … God is a God of judgment and he will soon intervene in history and set things straight on the earth. After the Rapture of the Church, it will begin ... culminating at the Great White Throne Judgment. You can read about it in my commentary of the book of Revelation at: http://biblebookofrevelation.com.
Let me clarify something very important here. Because of the cross, God is not holding man accountable for his wickedness and sin today. In our day, he only holds men accountable for one thing … UNBELIEF. Unbelief is the great sin of our day ... and it will certainly not go unpunished.
And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power… 2 Thes 1:7-9
Verses 23-24. How wonderful it is when we believers look to the Lord for our sanctification. By the way, sanctification (cleaning us up) is God's work … not ours! You and I can attempt to “turn over a new leaf” all we want but, believe me, it doesn’t work. Only Almighty God himself can clean up a believer. How? He does it through his Word. That’s why when Jesus prayed for you and me, he said,
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. Jn 17:17
Are you struggling with sin, dear saint? Read the Word. Is the flesh getting you down? Read the Word. Do you feel like a slave to sin? You’re not (Rom 6:14). Read the Word.
