A call to persevere
This passage is a turning point in our study of Hebrews. This is the main application part of the book. He is telling the Christians in the church how they should live. As these truths applied at the time of writing they still apply today.
His main point in this passage is the need to persevere. Keep going and keep growing in the Christian life.
It is a call to persevere by faith.
Boiled down into 3 points.
1/ the priest and his accomplishment.
We have confidence to enter the most holy place and we have confidence by His blood and through His body. We have a mediator between ourselves and a Holy God.
So in light of these things he goes on to say, Let us go right into His presence.
How should we respond? The passage tells us!
A. Let us draw near to God
B. Let us hold tightly to the hope we profess
C. Let us consider each other and motivate one another unto acts of good deeds and love
D. Let us not neglect meeting together
E. let us encourage one another
Here we see faith hope and love in action.
But are we active? Do we practice these let us'
2/. The apostate and his punishment.
These verses give us a solemn warning. If we reject Christ we would expect an eternal judgement. This doesn't mean a truly saved person will lose their salvation. This is not aimed at those Christians who have a sin they are having problems with. It is aimed at the false professors. They may have professed once but now trample the blood of Christ underfoot. They no longer believe what they once professed. Verse 31 tells us it is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
He is a God of grace but He is also a God of justice.
When we think of what will happen to those who never have heard the wonderful news of the gospel it should bring us to tears.
3/. the believer and his investment.
An investment may cost us something now but it will pay dividends in the future.
Don't give up as a Christian because one day you will receive a great reward. We will be saved. We will enjoy the reward of salvation. It is not something we can earn but with the help of the Holy Spirit we can keep pressing on.
Here in the passage the people were willing to pay the price in the here and now because of the future rewards.
Do we have a genuine faith? Do we really trust in The Lord Jesus as our saviour?
