Elijah
Discouragement is a weapon of Satan. Elijah had fled the country. He was so discouraged he had slumped under a broom tree and prayed he would die. Thankfully God didn't answer the way Elijah wanted.
1/ caved in. Verses 9 and 10.
God asks Elijah why he had come here. It was a rebuke to Elijah. Previously Elijah had t went anywhere without God's command. Elijah has came to Horeb on his own bat.
Elijah replies with verse 10. It was all true except the statement he was the only one left. It was only Jezebel who threatened to kill him. He was losing sight of the facts and exaggerating the problem.
We do the same in our lives. We say nothing is going right or maybe we say nobody cares. We become self focused. We should think about what we are saying and count our blessings.
2/. Called out. Verses. 11 - 14.
The Lord tells him to go out and stand before Him. Elijah stood where Moses stood. He will meet the God Moses met.
There was a hurricane, an earthquake and then a fire. God was not in any of these but He had sent them. So where was God. Verse 12 tells us. After the fire came a still small voice. Elijah comes out of the cave and stood before The Lord.
What does this represent. God is showing Elijah while He can work in the earthquake or the fire, He can also work in a more subtle way. He can work by His word.
We may want God to work in the big ways but He works through His living word.
God doesn't change sinners through earthquakes etc. but through His loving word. Through His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
God asks Elijah again what he is doing here and he answers God exactly the same way as before.
3/. Sent back. Verses 15 - 18.
Gods sends Elijah back the way he came. You fled the battle I want you to go back.
He was to anoint 3 men, verse 16 and 17.
He sent him back with a promise. These men would bring judgement. There would be no escape. If the evildoer escaped one sword they would be got with another. Elijah had a new perspective. He said he was the only one left. It wasn't true. Verse 18 tells us there were another 7000. God was saying He still had His church. Gods's people was much more than Elijah thought.
We are not the only true Church. Thank God for the many true Christians in our town, in our country and throughout the world.
