Gratitude appreciates - Ps. Nathan Turner

Lessons in appreciation from the parable of the prodigal son
1. Lack of appreciation leads to wasteful living
The prodigal son doesn't appreciate :- his father, his family, his inheritance
We tend to waste what we don't appreciate (influence, gifts, opportunities, relationships, etc)

2. Don't wait to appreciate
The prodigal son begins to appreciate when he remembers
The prodigal son's appreciation
*Began as he remembered (v.17)
*Brought to repentance (v17)
Repentance produces humility (v18)

3. The Father's love exceeds my expectations
The prodigal hoped for mercy, but received mercy and grace (Romans 5:20; james2:13; Ps 103:10-13)
The father's response is
Undignified (v20)
Generous (v22)
Exuberant (v23-25)

4. I cannot appreciate what I think I deserve
Self-righteousness ( the elder brother)
Is angered by mercy (v28)
Is focused on works and worthiness (v29, 30)
Wants to be recognized and celebrated (v29,30)
Misses the Father's heart (v31, 32)
