As the sound of the trumpet is a call to arms, so the words of Psalm 145 call a believer to praise and adoration. As we have it here in the first two verses, “I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name forever and ever. Every day will I bless thee; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever.”
Have you blessed the LORD today, dear believer? There is so much to bless and praise him for! All too often, we only speak to our wonderful Lord about our wants and needs. But, there should be so much more to our prayers than that. There are so many other things we could speak to him about … about what he has done, what he is doing and what he will do. Also, there are so many things we could say to him about his Person … about who he really, truly is.
Those of us who have had kids remember how they used to come running to us when they wanted something or were afraid and how we were always there for them. But, the most memorable times were when they came and hopped up in our lap and threw their arms around our neck and just said, “I love you!” Wow, that blew us away, aye? That is doubtless the case with our heavenly Father as well. When was the last time you cuddled up to your heavenly Father … climbed up in his lap, so to speak … and threw your arms around his neck and whispered in his ear ... “I love you.” Has it been a while? Go tell him.
David’s prayer here in Psalm 145, reminds me of just such a precious moment. And my, what a wide panorama of amazing things about our God we find here to speak to him about. Let’s lay them out in the order that David brought them up in this prayer.
He praises him for his: (v.3) unsearchable greatness; (v.4) works and acts; (v.5-6) glorious majesty; (v.7, 17) goodness and righteousness; (v.8) graciousness, compassion, longsuffering and mercy; (v.9) extended watch-care over everyone and everything; (v.11-13) his great and glorious kingdom … and raw power; (v.14) his forgiveness and help when his children fall or are just feeling down; (15-16) sustaining of every living thing (v18-19) availability, openness and provision; (v20) preservation of his people and judgment upon the wicked.
Truly, “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised…” aye? So, let’s tell him.
