Things that Make for a Good Praise and Thanksgiving Song

There is much to sing praises and give thanksgiving to God for. This little Psalm lists a few. Doubtless, there are some things here that are often overlooked when praising the Lord. It suggests praise and thanksgiving be sung to the Lord for the following:

Verses 2-3 …his future restoration of Israel. Amos 9:11-15 comes to mind,

’I will restore David’s fallen shelter—
I will repair its broken walls
and restore its ruins—
and will rebuild it as it used to be,
so that they may possess the remnant of Edom
and all the nations that bear my name,’
declares the LORD, who will do these things.
‘The days are coming,’ declares the LORD,
‘when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman
and the planter by the one treading grapes.
New wine will drip from the mountains
and flow from all the hills,
and I will bring my people Israel back from exile.
They will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them.
They will plant vineyards and drink their wine;
they will make gardens and eat their fruit.
I will plant Israel in their own land,
never again to be uprooted
from the land I have given them,’
says the LORD your God
.”

Verses 3-4 … his infinite knowledge (omniscience). He has given a name to each and every star!

Verse 6 … his compassion and justice

Verse 8 … sending his clouds and rain and making grass to grow

Verse 9 … feeding all the creatures and birds.Psalm 84:3 comes to mind,

Even the sparrow has found a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may have her young—
a place near your altar,
LORD Almighty, my King and my God
.”

Verse 11 … taking pleasure in all those who fear him and hope in his mercy

For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.” 2 Chron 16:9a

Verse 12-14 … the future peace and security of Jerusalem

Verse 15 … the raw and unstoppable power of his Word

For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returns not thither, but waters the earth, and makes it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sewer, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goes forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Isa 55:10-11

Verses 16-18 … his snow, frost, ice and cold and the thaw he sends causing the winds to blow and the water to flow!

Verse 19 ... And last but not least … the special and privileged position and standing of Israel over all other nations.

For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: Who are Israelites;to whom pertains the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.” Rom 9:3-5

Wonderful things to sing praises and give thanksgiving for, aye?!
