Obtaining vs. Finding
Ever get hung up on a word or phrase? That happened to me on this: "Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."
(Hebrews 4:16 NKJV)
I looked at every translation and in all of them grace is FOUND. Mercy can either be obtained or received. After thinking on this for some time now, I've come to this conclusion: a person gets mercy and grace differently, but at the same time through one over-arching action: coming to Jesus.
Obtaining and receiving imply one kind of action that you do when you come to Jesus, and that is this: repentance. Finding, on the other hand, implies something totally different: simply opening your eyes.
What I believe this truth is attempting to teach us is that we receive mercy when we confess we need it because we don't want to get what we deserve! Grace is getting what we don't deserve though, and that is found by just opening our eyes to fix them on Jesus: the Author and Finisher of our Faith.
Enjoy His mercy and grace my friends. Be thankful for them, and freely give them to others as freely as you have received them from the Father.
Peace,
Adam
