The greatest commandment is really one of the hardest. It's easy to SAY we love God or we Love Jesus, but do our daily actions and the meditations of our heart sincerely prove this. Yes, we believe but, is he our Lord?
To truly love God, Jesus, and honor Him as Lord, we must be under His Lordship. That means every part of our lives. We must trust and obey Him. We must let Him be Lord over our homes, our family, relationships, decisions, finances, our coming and going. It should be easy, because when you love someone and you know they love you then you trust that they will make wise decisions concerning these things. Often we take some things to The Lord, but other things we try to handle on our own. However, he is Lord and ruler over everything. It's best and wise to offer every area of our life to The Lord and He will make our way prosperous and keep us from making major mistakes. Remember The Lord loves us. It is never His intent to cause us harm or lead us down the wrong path. We must love Him with ALL our heart, mind, soul and strength. That's with everything within us.
Secondly, the same goes for out neighbors. Paul encourages us to esteem others higher than ourselves. If we love the Lord and are obeying his commandments or instructions, we can't help but to let His spirit through us, love one another. When we have problems loving others we need to do a "spirit" check. The Word says that God is love and if God's spirit dwells within us, that love will be shown to all mankind.
It's hard. Trust me I know. But we also must remember that when its hard to truly love somebody (in words and deeds and from the heart) we must remember that sometimes we are not really "hating" that person. For our struggle is not always necessarily with them. For we wrestle not with flesh and blood, but with demonic spirits, powers of darkness, and principalities. Folks say all the time," it ain't nothing but the devil."... And it is... However the power of Christ and the love of Christ is greater than any tricks and wiles of the devil. If we put on the armor of Christ, focus on the power of love that dwells within us, turn the other cheek, quote the Word and meditate on love, The devil will have to flee.
Loving our neighbors or brothers: These are not just the people who live next door, in our churches, or are family and friends. Our neighbor can be anyone. The homeless whom we pass everyday, a poor struggling elderly person, or widow, a person who constantly persecutes you, one who just gets on your nerves, a single parent, a divorcee, a drug addict, a wayward child or yes, even the picture perfect person who seems to have it all together but secretly needs the love of a neighbor.
We must love with all our hearts, minds, soul, strength. Although this may be hard to accomplish with EVERYONE, just remember the spirit of love is within each of us that loves God. We have to let that spirit shine and lead and overcome any other type of spirit that rises up within us. Not by our power, or our strength, but by His Spirit, saith The Lord!
Jesus, said that the man who knew (and acted on) this commandment was not far from the kingdom of God.
