1 Corinthians 14

1 Follow after love; yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.2 For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and exhortation, and consolation.4 He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.5 Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.6 But now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?7 Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they give not a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain voice, who shall prepare himself for war?9 So also ye, unless ye utter by the tongue speech easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will be speaking into the air.10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and no kind is without signification.11 If then I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh will be a barbarian unto me.12 So also ye, since ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may abound unto the edifying of the church.13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in a tongue pray that he may interpret.14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.16 Else if thou bless with the spirit, how shall he that filleth the place of the unlearned say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he knoweth not what thou sayest?17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.18 I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all:19 howbeit in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.20 Brethren, be not children in mind: yet in malice be ye babes, but in mind be men.21 In the law it is written, By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers will I speak unto this people; and not even thus will they hear me, saith the Lord.22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to the unbelieving: but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to them that believe.23 If therefore the whole church be assembled together and all speak with tongues, and there come in men unlearned or unbelieving, will they not say that ye are mad?24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one unbelieving or unlearned, he is reproved by all, he is judged by all;25 the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.26 What is it then, brethren? When ye come together, each one hath a psalm, hath a teaching, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.27 If any man speaketh in a tongue, let it be by two, or at the most three, and that in turn; and let one interpret:28 but if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.29 And let the prophets speak by two or three, and let the others discern.30 But if a revelation be made to another sitting by, let the first keep silence.31 For ye all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted;32 and the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets;33 for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,34 let the women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as also saith the law.35 And if they would learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home: for it is shameful for a woman to speak in the church.36 What? was it from you that the word of God went forth? or came it unto you alone?37 If any man thinketh himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him take knowledge of the things which I write unto you, that they are the commandment of the Lord.38 But if any man is ignorant, let him be ignorant.39 Wherefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.40 But let all things be done decently and in order.

Los dones del Espíritu y el provecho de la comunidad

1 Busquen, pues, sin descanso el amor y ambicionen también los dones del Espíritu, pero sobre todo el don de comunicar mensajes de parte de Dios.t 2 Pues quien habla un lenguaje misteriosot se dirige a Dios, pero no a los seres humanos; impulsado por el Espíritu, habla de cosas misteriosas que nadie entiende.t 3 En cambio, el que comunica mensajes de parte de Dios, se dirige a los seres humanos, les sirve de provecho espiritual, los anima y los consuela. 4 El que posee el don de hablar un lenguaje misterioso se beneficia a sí mismo, mientras que quien tiene el don de comunicar mensajes divinos, contribuye al provecho espiritual de la Iglesia.

5 Me gustaría que todos ustedes disfrutasen de ese don de hablar un lenguaje misterioso; sin embargo, prefiero que tengan el de comunicar mensajes de parte de Dios. Y es que para el provecho espiritual de la Iglesia, es más útil el que comunica mensajes que quien habla un lenguaje misterioso, a no ser que alguien interprete ese lenguaje misterioso.
6 En concreto, hermanos, supongan que yo los visito y que me dirijo a ustedes utilizando ese lenguaje misterioso. ¿De qué les aprovecharía si no les comunicase alguna revelación, algún conocimiento, algún mensaje o alguna enseñanza? 7 Tienen el caso de los instrumentos musicales, la flauta o el arpa, por ejemplo. Si no emiten clara y distintamente los sonidos, ¿cómo saber si es la flauta o el arpa lo que suena? 8 Y si el toque de la trompeta llega de forma irreconocible, ¿quién va a prepararse para la batalla?

9 Pues lo mismo ustedes: si se expresan en un lenguaje misterioso en lugar de usar palabras inteligibles, ¿quién entendería lo que dicen? ¡Estarán hablando a las paredes!
10 En el mundo hay infinidad de idiomas, y cada uno tiene su forma particular. 11 Pero si desconozco la forma de un idioma, seré un extranjerot para quien quiera hablar conmigo, y él lo será para mí.

12 Pues lo mismo ustedes: ya que tanto ambicionan los dones del Espíritu, procuren, al menos, poseer en abundancia los que contribuyan al provecho espiritual de la Iglesia.
13 Concluyendo: el que posea el don de hablar en un lenguaje misterioso, pídale a Dios el don de interpretarlo. 14 Porque si estoy orando en ese lenguaje misterioso, mi espíritu ora ciertamente, pero mi mente no recibe fruto alguno. 15 ¿Qué hacer entonces? Trataré de orar impulsado por el Espíritu, pero intentando comprender lo que digo; trataré de cantar impulsado por el Espíritu, pero intentando entender lo que canto.t 16 Supongamos que, impulsado por el Espíritu, prorrumpes en una alabanza a Dios; ¿cómo podrá responder “Amén” a tu acción de gracias el simple fielt, si no sabe lo que has dicho? 17 Habrás pronunciado una magnífica acción de gracias, inútil, sin embargo, para el provecho espiritual del que te escucha. 18 Yo, por mi parte, le agradezco a Dios el poder hablar ese lenguaje misterioso mejor que cualquiera de ustedes.

19 Con todo, cuando nos reunimos en asamblea, prefiero decir cinco palabras inteligibles e instructivas, a pronunciar diez mil en un lenguaje ininteligible.
20 Hermanos, no se comporten como niños al razonar. Tengan, sí, la inocencia del niño en lo que atañe al mal; pero, en cuanto a sus propios razonamientos, sean personas hechas y derechas.t 21 Está escrito en la ley: En otros idiomas y por boca de extranjeros hablaré a este pueblo, y ni siquiera así me escucharán, dice el Señort.t 22 El don, pues, de hablar un lenguaje misterioso tiene carácter de signo para los incrédulos, no para los creyentes. En cambio, el don de comunicar mensajes de parte de Dios está destinado a los creyentes, más bien que a los incrédulos. 23 Supongamos que toda la comunidad de creyentes se reúne en asamblea y que todos se expresan en ese lenguaje misterioso. Si en ese momento entra un simple fielt o un no creyente, pensará que están locos. 24 Por el contrario, si ese simple fiel o ese no creyente entra mientras todos están comunicándose mensajes de parte de Dios, es muy posible que entre todos le hagan recapacitar y reconocer sus pecados,

25 dejando al descubierto sus más íntimos secretos. Caerá entonces de rodillas y adorará a Dios, proclamando que Dios se encuentra verdaderamente entre ustedes.t

Normas prácticas para el buen funcionamiento de la asamblea

28 Si no hay tal intérprete, guárdese silencio en la asamblea y hable cada uno consigo mismo y con Dios.
29 En cuanto a los que comunican mensajes de parte Dios, que hablen dos o tres, y los demás limítense a dar su parecer. 30 Pero si uno de los asistentes recibe mientras tanto una revelación, deberá callarse el que está hablando. 31 Todos pueden, con tal que lo hagan por turno, comunicar los mensajes recibidos de Dios, para que todos aprendan y sean exhortados. 32 Por lo demás, el don de comunicar estos mensajes divinos debe estar controlado por los que tienen ese don,

33 pues no quiere Dios el desorden, sino la paz.
Como es costumbre en las demás comunidades cristianas, 34 las mujeres deben guardar silencio en la asamblea; no les está, pues, permitido tomar la palabra, sino que deben mostrar el debido respeto, como manda la ley.t

35 Si desean saber algo, que se lo pregunten en casa a sus maridos, porque no está bien que la mujer hable en la asambleat.
36 Tengan en cuenta que no partió de ustedes la palabra de Dios, ni son ustedes los únicos en haberla recibidot. 37 Quien presuma de recibir mensajes de parte de Dios o de ser persona animada por el Espíritu, deberá reconocer que esto que les escribo es mandato del Señor.

38 Y si no lo reconoce, que no se haga ilusiones de ser él reconocidot.
39 En una palabra, hermanos: ambicionen el don de comunicar mensajes de parte Dios, aunque sin cerrar el paso a quienes hablan un lenguaje misterioso. 40 En cualquier caso, háganlo todo de forma conveniente y ordenada.
