1 Kings 18

1 And it came to pass after many days, that the word of Jehovah came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.2 And Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And the famine was sore in Samaria.3 And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared Jehovah greatly:4 for it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)5 And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go through the land, unto all the fountains of water, and unto all the brooks: peradventure we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

7 And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Is it thou, my lord Elijah?8 And he answered him, It is I: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.9 And he said, Wherein have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?10 As Jehovah thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not here, he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.11 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.12 And it will come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of Jehovah will carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he will slay me: but I thy servant fear Jehovah from my youth.13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of Jehovah, how I hid a hundred men of Jehovah’s prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?14 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here; and he will slay me.15 And Elijah said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to-day.

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Is it thou, thou troubler of Israel?18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baalim.19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, that eat at Jezebel’s table.

20 So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.21 And Elijah came near unto all the people, and said, How long go ye limping between the two sides? if Jehovah be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, am left a prophet of Jehovah; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under.24 And call ye on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Jehovah; and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under.26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped about the altar which was made.27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god: either he is musing, or he is gone aside, or he is on a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth and must be awaked.28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lances, till the blood gushed out upon them.29 And it was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening oblation; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

30 And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me; and all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of Jehovah that was thrown down.31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of Jehovah came, saying, Israel shall be thy name.32 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of Jehovah; and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the wood.34 And he said, Do it the second time; and they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time; and they did it the third time.35 And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.37 Hear me, O Jehovah, hear me, that this people may know that thou, Jehovah, art God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.38 Then the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, Jehovah, he is God; Jehovah, he is God.40 and Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

41 And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees.43 And he said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a cloud out of the sea, as small as a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Make ready thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.45 And it came to pass in a little while, that the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel:46 and the hand of Jehovah was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

Elías, Abdías y Ajab

1 Mucho tiempo después, al tercer año, el Señor envió este mensaje a Elías:
— Vete y preséntate a Ajab, porque voy a mandar la lluvia sobre la tierra.
2 Elías marchó a presentarse a Ajab. En Samaría había un hambre atroz. 3 Ajab llamó a Abdías, el mayordomo de palacio. Abdías era profundamente religioso 4 y cuando Jezabel quiso acabar con los profetas del Señort, recogió a cien de ellos, los escondió en cuevas en dos grupos de cincuenta y les proporcionó alimento y agua.

5 Ajab dijo a Abdías:
— Vamos a recorrer todas las fuentes y arroyos del país, a ver si encontramos pasto y mantenemos vivos a caballos y mulos sin tener que sacrificar animales.
6 Se dividieron el territorio a recorrer: Ajab se fue por un lado y Abdías por otro.

7 Mientras Abdías iba de camino, Elías le salió al encuentro. Al reconocerlo, Abdías se inclinó ante él y le pregunto:
— ¿Eres tú mi señor Elías?

8 Él le respondió:
— Sí, soy yo. Vete y dile a tu amo que Elías está aquí.

9 Abdías le dijo:
— ¿Qué pecado he cometido para que me entregues a Ajab y me mate? 10 ¡Te juro por el Señor, tu Dios, que no hay nación ni reino donde mi amo no haya mandado a buscarte! Y cuando respondían que no estabas, él hacía jurar a la nación o al reino que no te habían encontrado. 11 ¡Y ahora me dices que vaya a decirle a mi amo que Elías está aquí! 12 Seguro que cuando me separe de ti, el espíritu del Señor te llevarát a un lugar desconocido; así que cuando yo llegue a comunicárselo a Ajab, al no encontrarte, me matará. Este siervo tuyo ha respetado al Señor desde su juventud. 13 ¿No te han contado lo que hice cuando Jezabel estaba matando a los profetas del Señor? Escondí a cien de ellos en dos cuevas, cincuenta por cueva, y les proporcioné alimento y comida.

14 ¡Y ahora me dices que vaya a decirle a mi amo que Elías está aquí! ¡Me matará!

15 Elías le dijo:
— ¡Te juro por el Señor del universo, a quien sirvo, que hoy me presentaré ante Ajab!
16 Abdías fue a buscar a Ajab para informarle. Entonces Ajab salió al encuentro de Elías

17 y cuando lo vio, le dijo:
— ¿Eres tú, azote de Israel?

18 Elías le respondió:
— No soy yo el azote de Israel, sino tú y tu familia que han abandonado los mandamientos del Señor para seguir a los baalest.t

19 Pero ahora manda que se reúna conmigo todo Israel en el monte Carmelo, con los cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas de Baal y de Astartét, mantenidos por Jezabel.

El sacrificio del Carmelo

21 Elías se acercó a la gente y dijo:
— ¿Hasta cuándo seguirán danzando una vez sobre un pie y otra vez sobre otrot? Si el Señor es Dios, síganlo; si lo es Baal, sigan a Baal.
Pero la gente no respondió.

22 Elías dijo a la gente:
— De los profetas del Señor he quedado yo solo, mientras que los profetas de Baal son cuatrocientos cincuenta. 23 Pues bien, que nos den dos novillos y que ellos escojan uno, lo descuarticen y lo pongan sobre la leña sin prenderle fuego; yo haré lo mismo con el otro novillo.

24 Ustedes invocarán a su dios y yo invocaré al Señor; el que responda enviando fuego será el verdadero Dios.
Toda la gente asintió:
— Es una buena propuesta.

25 Elías dijo entonces a los profetas de Baal:
— Elijan un novillo y prepárenlo ustedes primero, ya que son más numerosos. Luego invoquen a su dios, pero sin prenderle fuego.

26 Prepararon ellos el novillo que les dieron y se pusieron a invocar a Baal desde la mañana hasta el mediodía, gritando:
— Baal, respóndenos.
Pero no se oyó ninguna voz ni respuesta. Entonces se pusieron a danzar alrededor del altar que habían hecho.

27 Hacia el mediodía Elías comenzó a burlarse de ellos, diciendo:
— ¡Griten más fuerte! Aunque Baal sea dios, tendrá sus ocupaciones y sus necesidades, o estará de viaje. A lo mejor está dormido y tendrá que despertart. 28 Ellos se pusieron a gritar más fuerte y, como tenían por costumbre, se hicieron cortest con espadas y lanzas hasta quedar cubiertos de sangre. 29 Después de mediodía entraron en éxtasis hasta la hora de la ofrenda. Pero no se oyó ninguna voz, ni hubo respuesta ni reacción alguna.

30 Entonces Elías dijo a la gente:
— Acérquense a mí.
Toda la gente se acercó y Elías reconstruyó el altar del Señor que estaba derrumbado. 31 Tomó doce piedrast, conforme a las tribus de los hijos de Jacob, a quien el Señor había dicho: “Te llamarás Israel”, t 32 y con ellas levantó un altar en honor del Señor. Hizo también una zanja alrededor del altar con una capacidad de dos medidast de grano, 33 colocó la leña, descuartizó el novillo y lo puso sobre la leña.t

34 Luego ordenó:
— Traigan cuatro cántaros de agua y échenla sobre la víctima y la leña.
Y añadió:
— Háganlo otra vez.
Lo hicieron, pero Elías insistió:
— Háganlo por tercera vez.
Y así lo hicieron. 35 El agua corrió alrededor del altar e incluso llenó la zanja.

36 Al llegar la hora del sacrificio, el profeta Elías se acercó y dijo:
— Señor, Dios de Abrahán, Isaac e Israel: haz que hoy se reconozca que tú eres el Dios de Israel y que yo soy tu siervo que he actuado así por orden tuya.

37 Respóndeme, Señor, respóndeme, para que este pueblo reconozca que tú, Señor, eres Dios, y que eres tú el que harás volver sus corazones a ti.
38 Entonces descendió el fuego divino, devoró el holocausto, la leña, las piedras y el polvo, y secó el agua de la zanja.

39 Al verlo, toda la gente cayó en tierra, exclamando:
— ¡El Señor es Dios! ¡El Señor es Dios!

40 Elías les ordenó:
— ¡Apresen a los profetas de Baal y que no escape ni uno!
Los apresaron y Elías mandó bajarlos al arroyo Quisón y allí los degollót.

El fin de la sequía

41 Elías dijo a Ajab:
— Vete a comer y a beber, pues se oye el ruido del aguacerot.
42 Ajab se fue a comer y beber. Elías, por su parte, subió a la cima del Carmelo, se sentó en tierra con el rostro entre las rodillas

43 y dijo a su criado:
— Sube y mira en dirección al mar.
El criado subió, miró y dijo:
— No se ve nada.
Por siete veces Elías le dijo:
— Vuelve a hacerlo.

44 A la séptima vez, el criado dijo:
— Viene del mar una nube pequeña como la palma de la mano.
Entonces Elías le dijo:
— Vete a decirle a Ajab: “Engancha y márchate, antes de que la lluvia te lo impida”.
45 Inmediatamente, por efecto de las nubes y el viento, el cielo se encapotó y se desencadenó el aguacero. Ajab montó en su carro y marchó a Jezrael. 46 Elías, impulsado por la fuerza del Señor, se ciñó la ropa a la cintura y se fue corriendo delante de Ajab hasta llegar a Jezrael.t
