2 Samuel 10

1 And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.2 And David said, I will show kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness unto me. So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.3 But the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father, in that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David sent his servants unto thee to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?4 So Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.5 When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they were become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with a thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men.7 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.8 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate: and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob, and the men of Tob and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.

9 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:10 And the rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon.11 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me; but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.12 Be of good courage, and let us play the man for our people, and for the cities of our God: and Jehovah do that which seemeth him good.13 So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.14 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

15 And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they gathered themselves together.16 And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the River: and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer at their head.17 And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians the men of seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, so that he died there.19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

Derrotas de amonitas y sirios

1 Después de esto, aconteció que murió el rey de los hijos de Amón, y reinó en lugar suyo su hijo Hanún.2 Dijo David: «Yo tendré misericordia con Hanún hijo de Nahas, como su padre la tuvo conmigo.» Y envió David a sus siervos para que lo consolaran por su padre. Pero cuando los siervos de David llegaron a la tierra de los hijos de Amón,

3 los príncipes de los hijos de Amón dijeron a Hanún, su señor: «¿Crees acaso que por honrar a tu padre, David te ha enviado mensajeros a que te consuelen? ¿No te ha enviado David sus siervos para reconocer la ciudad, inspeccionarla y destruirla?»
4 Entonces Hanún tomó a los siervos de David, les rapó la mitad de la barba, les cortó los vestidos por la mitad hasta las nalgas, y los despidió.

5 Cuando se le hizo saber esto a David, envió gente a su encuentro, porque ellos estaban en extremo avergonzados. Y el rey les mandó a decir: «Quedaos en Jericó hasta que os vuelva a nacer la barba, y entonces volved.»
6 Viendo los hijos de Amón que se habían hecho odiosos a David, mandaron a tomar a sueldo veinte mil hombres de a pie entre los sirios de Bet-rehob y los sirios de Soba, mil hombres del rey de Maaca, y doce mil hombres de Is-tob.7 Cuando David oyó esto, envió a Joab con todo el ejército de los valientes.8 Los hijos de Amón salieron y se pusieron en orden de batalla a la entrada de la puerta; pero los sirios de Soba, de Rehob, de Is-tob y de Maaca tomaron posiciones aparte en el campo.9 Viendo, pues, Joab que se le presentaba la batalla de frente y desde la retaguardia, seleccionó a lo mejor de los escogidos de Israel, y se puso en orden de batalla contra los sirios.10 Entregó luego el resto del ejército en manos de su hermano Abisai, y lo alineó frente a los amonitas.11 Y dijo: «Si los sirios pueden más que yo, tú me ayudarás; y si los hijos de Amón pueden más que tú, yo te daré ayuda.

12 Ten fortaleza, esforcémonos por nuestro pueblo y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios. Que Jehová haga lo que bien le parezca.»
13 Se acercó Joab, y el pueblo que con él estaba, para pelear contra los sirios; pero ellos huyeron delante de él.

14 Entonces los hijos de Amón, viendo que los sirios habían huido, huyeron también ellos ante Abisai y se refugiaron en la ciudad, mientras que Joab dejó de luchar contra los hijos de Amón y volvió a Jerusalén.
15 Pero los sirios, al ver que habían sido derrotados por Israel, se volvieron a reunir.16 Hadad-ezer mandó a buscar a los sirios que estaban al otro lado del Éufrates, los cuales llegaron a Helam comandados por Sobac, general del ejército de Hadad-ezer.17 Cuando le fue dado aviso, David reunió a todo Israel, pasó el Jordán y llegó a Helam. Los sirios se pusieron en orden de batalla contra David y pelearon contra él.18 Pero los sirios huyeron delante de Israel, y David les mató a la gente de setecientos carros, y cuarenta mil hombres de a caballo. Hirió también a Sobac, general del ejército, quien murió allí.

19 Cuando todos los reyes que ayudaban a Hadad-ezer vieron cómo habían caído derrotados ante Israel, hicieron las paces con Israel y les quedaron sometidos. De ahí en adelante, los sirios temieron seguir ayudando a los hijos de Amón.
