Deuteronomy 1

1 These are the words which Moses spake unto all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah over against Suph, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Di-zahab.2 It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea.3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that Jehovah had given him in commandment unto them;4 after he had smitten Sihon the king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth, at Edrei.5 Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,6 Jehovah our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mountain:7 turn you, and take your journey, and go to the hill-country of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the Arabah, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and in the South, and by the sea-shore, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.8 Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which Jehovah sware unto your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.

9 And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone:10 Jehovah your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.11 Jehovah, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!12 How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?13 Take you wise men, and understanding, and known, according to your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.14 And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do.15 So I took the heads of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers, according to your tribes.16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the sojourner that is with him.17 Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; ye shall hear the small and the great alike; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you ye shall bring unto me, and I will hear it.18 And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.19 And we journeyed from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which ye saw, by the way to the hill-country of the Amorites, as Jehovah our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.20 And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the hill-country of the Amorites, which Jehovah our God giveth unto us.21 Behold, Jehovah thy God hath set the land before thee: go up, take possession, as Jehovah, the God of thy fathers, hath spoken unto thee; fear not, neither be dismayed.22 And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, Let us send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up, and the cities unto which we shall come.23 And the thing pleased me well; and I took twelve men of you, one man for every tribe:24 and they turned and went up into the hill-country, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out.25 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which Jehovah our God giveth unto us.

26 Yet ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of Jehovah your God:27 and ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because Jehovah hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.28 Whither are we going up? our brethren have made our heart to melt, saying, The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.29 Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.30 Jehovah your God who goeth before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes,31 and in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that Jehovah thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came unto this place.32 Yet in this thing ye did not believe Jehovah your God,33 who went before you in the way, to seek you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to show you by what way ye should go, and in the cloud by day.

34 And Jehovah heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying,35 Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see the good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers,36 save Caleb the son of Jephunneh: he shall see it; and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed Jehovah.37 Also Jehovah was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither:38 Joshua the son of Nun, who standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage thou him; for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.39 Moreover your little ones, that ye said should be a prey, and your children, that this day have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.40 But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.

41 Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against Jehovah, we will go up and fight, according to all that Jehovah our God commanded us. And ye girded on every man his weapons of war, and were forward to go up into the hill-country.42 And Jehovah said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.43 So I spake unto you, and ye hearkened not; but ye rebelled against the commandment of Jehovah, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill-country.44 And the Amorites, that dwelt in that hill-country, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even unto Hormah.45 And ye returned and wept before Jehovah; but Jehovah hearkened not to your voice, nor gave ear unto you.46 So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.

Deuteronomio 1

Moisés recuerda a Israel las promesas de Jehová en Horeb

1 Éstas son las palabras que habló Moisés a todo Israel a este lado del Jordán, en el desierto, en el Arabá, frente al Mar Rojo, entre Parán, Tofel, Labán, Hazerot y Dizahab.2 Once jornadas hay desde Horeb, camino de los montes de Seir, hasta Cades-barnea.3 Y aconteció que a los cuarenta años, el primer día del undécimo mes, Moisés habló a los hijos de Israel conforme a todas las cosas que Jehová le había mandado acerca de ellos,4 después que derrotó a Sehón, rey de los amorreos, el cual habitaba en Hesbón, y a Og, rey de Basán, que habitaba en Astarot, en Edrei.

5 De este lado del Jordán, en tierra de Moab, resolvió Moisés proclamar esta ley, diciendo:
6 «Jehová, nuestro Dios, nos habló así en Horeb: “Habéis estado bastante tiempo en este monte.7 Volveos e id al monte del amorreo y a todas sus comarcas, en el Arabá, en el monte, en los valles, en el Neguev y junto a la costa del mar, a la tierra del cananeo y al Líbano, hasta el gran río, el río Éufrates.

8 Mirad, yo os he entregado la tierra; entrad y poseed la tierra que Jehová juró dar a vuestros padres Abraham, Isaac y Jacob, y a su descendencia después de ellos.”

Nombramiento de jueces

9 »En aquel tiempo yo os hablé y os dije: “Yo solo no puedo llevaros.10 Jehová, vuestro Dios, os ha multiplicado tanto que hoy vosotros sois tan numerosos como las estrellas del cielo.11 ¡Jehová, Dios de vuestros padres, os haga mil veces más numerosos de lo que ahora sois y os bendiga, como os ha prometido!12 ¿Cómo llevaré yo solo vuestras molestias, vuestras cargas y vuestros pleitos?

13 Dadme de entre vosotros, de vuestras tribus, hombres sabios, entendidos y expertos, para que yo los ponga como vuestros jefes.”

14 »Me respondisteis y dijisteis: “Bueno es hacer lo que has dicho.”
15 »Entonces tomé a los principales de vuestras tribus, hombres sabios y expertos, y los puse como jefes sobre vosotros, jefes de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez, y gobernadores de vuestras tribus.16 Y di a vuestros jueces esta orden: “Oíd entre vuestros hermanos, y juzgad justamente entre el hombre y su hermano, o un extranjero.

17 No hagáis distinción de persona en el juicio: tanto al pequeño como al grande oiréis. No tendréis temor de ninguno, porque el juicio es de Dios. La causa que os sea difícil, la traeréis a mí, y yo la oiré.”

18 »Os mandé, pues, en aquel tiempo, todo lo que habíais de hacer.

Misión de los doce exploradores

19 »Cuando salimos de Horeb, anduvimos todo aquel grande y terrible desierto que habéis visto, por el camino del monte del amorreo, como Jehová, nuestro Dios, nos lo mandó, y llegamos hasta Cades-barnea.20 Entonces os dije: “Habéis llegado al monte del amorreo, el cual Jehová, nuestro Dios, nos da.21 Mira, Jehová, tu Dios, te ha entregado la tierra: sube y toma posesión de ella, como Jehová, el Dios de tus padres, te ha dicho. No temas ni desmayes.”

22 Pero os acercasteis todos a decirme: “Enviemos hombres delante de nosotros, que reconozcan la tierra y a su regreso nos traigan razón del camino por donde hemos de subir y de las ciudades adonde hemos de llegar.”
23 »La propuesta me pareció bien, y tomé doce hombres de entre vosotros, un hombre por cada tribu.24 Ellos se encaminaron y subieron al monte; llegaron hasta el valle de Escol y reconocieron la tierra.25 Tomaron en sus manos de los frutos del país, nos los trajeron y nos dieron este informe: “Es buena la tierra que Jehová nuestro Dios nos da.”26 Sin embargo, no quisisteis subir, sino que fuisteis rebeldes al mandato de Jehová, vuestro Dios.27 Os pusisteis a murmurar en vuestras tiendas, diciendo: “Porque Jehová nos aborrece, nos ha sacado de la tierra de Egipto, para entregarnos en manos del amorreo y destruirnos.

28 ¿A dónde subiremos? Nuestros hermanos han atemorizado nuestro corazón, al decir: ‘Este pueblo es mayor y más alto que nosotros, las ciudades son grandes y están amuralladas hasta el cielo. Allí también vimos a los hijos de Anac.’”
29 »Entonces os dije: “No temáis ni tengáis miedo de ellos.30 Jehová, vuestro Dios, el cual va delante de vosotros, peleará por vosotros, conforme a todas las cosas que hizo por vosotros en Egipto ante vuestros ojos.31 En el desierto has visto que Jehová, tu Dios, te ha traído, como trae el hombre a su hijo, por todo el camino que habéis andado, hasta llegar a este lugar.”32 Pero ni aun así creísteis a Jehová, vuestro Dios,

33 quien iba delante de vosotros por el camino para buscaros el lugar donde habíais de acampar, con el fuego de noche para mostraros el camino que debías seguir, y con la nube de día.

Dios castiga a Israel

34 »Cuando Jehová oyó la voz de vuestras palabras, se enojó e hizo este juramento:35 “Ni un solo hombre de esta mala generación verá la buena tierra que juré que había de dar a vuestros padres,

36 excepto Caleb hijo de Jefone; él la verá, y yo le daré a él y a sus hijos la tierra que pisó, porque ha seguido fielmente a Jehová.”
37 »También contra mí se enojó Jehová por vosotros, y me dijo: “Tampoco tú entrarás allá.38 Josué hijo de Nun, el cual te sirve, él entrará allá; anímalo, porque él la entregará a Israel.39 Y vuestros niños, de los cuales dijisteis que servirían de botín, y vuestros hijos, que no saben hoy lo bueno ni lo malo, ellos entrarán allá; a ellos la daré y ellos la heredarán.

40 Pero vosotros volveos e id al desierto, camino del Mar Rojo.”

La derrota en Horma

41 »Entonces respondisteis y me dijisteis: “Hemos pecado contra Jehová. Nosotros subiremos y pelearemos, conforme a todo lo que Jehová, nuestro Dios, nos ha mandado.” Os armasteis cada uno con vuestras armas de guerra y os preparasteis para subir al monte.

42 Pero Jehová me dijo: “Diles: No subáis ni peleéis, pues no estoy entre vosotros; para que no seáis derrotados por vuestros enemigos.”
43 »Yo os hablé, pero no me escuchasteis; antes fuisteis rebeldes al mandato de Jehová, y persistiendo con altivez subisteis al monte.44 Pero salió a vuestro encuentro el amorreo que habitaba en aquel monte, os persiguieron como hacen las avispas y os derrotaron en Seir hasta llegar a Horma.45 Entonces volvisteis y llorasteis delante de Jehová, pero Jehová no escuchó vuestra voz ni os prestó atención.

46 Por eso os tuvisteis que quedar en Cades todo ese tiempo que habéis estado allí.
