Deuteronomy 31

1 And Moses went and spake these words unto all Israel.2 And he said unto them, I am a hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: and Jehovah hath said unto me, Thou shalt not go over this Jordan.3 Jehovah thy God, he will go over before thee; he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt dispossess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as Jehovah hath spoken.4 And Jehovah will do unto them as he did to Sihon and to Og, the kings of the Amorites, and unto their land; whom he destroyed.5 And Jehovah will deliver them up before you, and ye shall do unto them according unto all the commandment which I have commanded you.6 Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be affrighted at them: for Jehovah thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.7 And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of good courage: for thou shalt go with this people into the land which Jehovah hath sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it.8 And Jehovah, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

9 And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi, that bare the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and unto all the elders of Israel.10 And Moses commanded them, saying, At the end of every seven years, in the set time of the year of release, in the feast of tabernacles,11 when all Israel is come to appear before Jehovah thy God in the place which he shall choose, thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing.12 Assemble the people, the men and the women and the little ones, and thy sojourner that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear Jehovah your God, and observe to do all the words of this law;13 and that their children, who have not known, may hear, and learn to fear Jehovah your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over the Jordan to possess it.

14 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Behold, thy days approach that thou must die: call Joshua, and present yourselves in the tent of meeting, that I may give him a charge. And Moses and Joshua went, and presented themselves in the tent of meeting.15 And Jehovah appeared in the Tent in a pillar of cloud: and the pillar of cloud stood over the door of the Tent.16 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and play the harlot after the strange gods of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.17 Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall come upon them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us?18 And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evil which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.19 Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach thou it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.20 For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers, flowing with milk and honey, and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and waxed fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and despise me, and break my covenant.21 And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are come upon them, that this song shall testify before them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they frame this day, before I have brought them into the land which I sware.22 So Moses wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel.23 And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, Be strong and of good courage; for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them: and I will be with thee.

24 And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished,25 that Moses commanded the Levites, that bare the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, saying,26 Take this book of the law, and put it by the side of the ark of the covenant of Jehovah your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.27 For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against Jehovah; and how much more after my death?28 Assemble unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to witness against them.29 For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days; because ye will do that which is evil in the sight of Jehovah, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands.

30 And Moses spake in the ears of all the assembly of Israel the words of this song, until they were finished.

Deuteronomio 31

Josué es instalado como sucesor de Moisés

1 Fue Moisés y le dirigió estas palabras a todo Israel.

2 Les dijo:
«Ya tengo ciento veinte años de edad y no puedo salir ni entrar. Además de esto, Jehová me ha dicho: “No pasarás este Jordán.”3 Jehová, tu Dios, él pasa delante de ti; él destruirá a estas naciones delante de ti, y las heredarás. Josué será el que pasará delante de ti, como Jehová ha dicho.4 Jehová hará con ellos como hizo con Sehón y con Og, reyes de los amorreos, y con su tierra, a quienes destruyó.5 Los entregará Jehová delante de vosotros, y haréis con ellos conforme a todo lo que os he mandado.

6 ¡Esforzaos y cobrad ánimo! No temáis ni tengáis miedo de ellos, porque Jehová, tu Dios, es el que va contigo; no te dejará, ni te desamparará.»

7 Después llamó Moisés a Josué y le dijo en presencia de todo Israel:
«¡Esfuérzate y anímate!, porque tú entrarás con este pueblo a la tierra que juró Jehová a sus padres que les daría, y tú se la harás heredar.

8 Jehová va delante de ti; él estará contigo, no te dejará ni te desamparará. No temas ni te intimides.»
9 Escribió Moisés esta Ley y se la dio a los sacerdotes, hijos de Leví, que llevaban el Arca del pacto de Jehová, y a todos los ancianos de Israel.

10 Y Moisés les dio esta orden:
«Cada siete años, al llegar el año de la remisión, en la fiesta de los Tabernáculos,11 cuando vaya todo Israel a presentarse delante de Jehová, tu Dios, en el lugar que él escoja, leerás esta Ley ante todo Israel, a oídos de todos ellos.12 Harás congregar al pueblo, hombres, mujeres y niños, y los extranjeros que estén en tus ciudades, para que oigan y aprendan a temer a Jehová, vuestro Dios, y cuiden de cumplir todas las palabras de esta Ley.

13 También los hijos de ellos, que no la conocen, podrán oírla y aprenderán a temer a Jehová, vuestro Dios, todos los días que viváis sobre la tierra que vais a poseer tras pasar el Jordán.»

14 Luego Jehová dijo a Moisés:
«Mira, se ha acercado el día de tu muerte. Llama a Josué y esperad en el Tabernáculo de reunión para que yo le dé mis órdenes.»
Fueron, pues, Moisés y Josué, y esperaron en el Tabernáculo de reunión,15 y se apareció Jehová en el Tabernáculo, en la columna de nube, la cual se puso sobre la puerta del Tabernáculo.

16 Entonces Jehová dijo a Moisés:
«He aquí que vas a dormir con tus padres, y este pueblo se levantará para prostituirse tras los dioses ajenos de la tierra adonde va para vivir en medio de ella. Me dejará e invalidará el pacto que he concertado con él.17 Pero aquel día se encenderá mi furor contra él, los abandonaré y esconderé de ellos mi rostro; serán consumidos y vendrán sobre ellos muchos males y angustias. Dirán en aquel día: “¿No me han venido estos males porque no está mi Dios en medio de mí?”

18 Pero ciertamente yo esconderé mi rostro en aquel día, por todo el mal que ellos habrán hecho, por haberse vuelto a dioses ajenos.
19 »Ahora pues, escribe este cántico y enséñalo a los hijos de Israel; ponlo en su boca, para que este cántico me sirva de testigo contra los hijos de Israel.20 Porque cuando yo los introduzca en la tierra que juré a sus padres, la cual fluye leche y miel, comerán hasta saciarse, y engordarán, se volverán a dioses ajenos y los servirán, me enojarán e invalidarán mi pacto.

21 Y cuando les vengan muchos males y angustias, entonces este cántico servirá de testigo contra él, pues será recordado por boca de sus descendientes; porque yo conozco lo que se proponen de antemano, antes que los introduzca en la tierra que juré darles.»

22 Moisés escribió este cántico aquel día, y lo enseñó a los hijos de Israel.

23 Luego dio esta orden a Josué hijo de Nun:
«¡Esfuérzate y anímate!, pues tú introducirás a los hijos de Israel en la tierra que les juré, y yo estaré contigo.»

Orden de guardar la Ley junto al Arca

24 Cuando acabó Moisés de escribir las palabras de esta Ley en un libro hasta concluirlo,

25 Moisés dio estas órdenes a los levitas que llevaban el Arca del pacto de Jehová:
26 «Tomad este libro de la Ley y ponedlo al lado del Arca del pacto de Jehová, vuestro Dios; que esté allí como testigo contra ti.27 Porque yo conozco tu rebelión y tu dura cerviz. Si aun viviendo yo con vosotros hoy, sois rebeldes a Jehová; ¿cuánto más después que yo haya muerto?28 Congregad junto a mí a todos los ancianos de vuestras tribus y a vuestros oficiales; yo hablaré en sus oídos estas palabras, y llamaré como testigos contra ellos a los cielos y a la tierra.

29 Porque yo sé que, después de mi muerte, ciertamente os corromperéis y os apartaréis del camino que os he mandado, y que la desgracia vendrá sobre vosotros en los días venideros, por haber hecho lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, enojándolo con la obra de vuestras manos.»

Cántico de Moisés

30 Entonces pronunció Moisés a oídos de toda la congregación de Israel, de principio a fin, las palabras de este cántico:
