Exodus 5

1 And afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said unto Pharaoh, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.2 And Pharaoh said, Who is Jehovah, that I should hearken unto his voice to let Israel go? I know not Jehovah, and moreover I will not let Israel go.3 And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days’ journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice unto Jehovah our God, lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.4 And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, loose the people from their works? get you unto your burdens.5 And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land are now many, and ye make them rest from their burdens.6 And the same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves.8 And the number of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish aught thereof: for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.9 Let heavier work be laid upon the men, that they may labor therein; and let them not regard lying words.

10 And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spake to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw.11 Go yourselves, get you straw where ye can find it: for nought of your work shall be diminished.12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.13 And the taskmasters were urgent saying, Fulfil your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.14 And the officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task both yesterday and to-day, in making brick as heretofore?

15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants?16 There is no straw given unto thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and, behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault it in thine own people.17 But he said, Ye are idle, ye are idle: therefore ye say, Let us go and sacrifice to Jehovah.18 Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the number of bricks.19 And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case, when it was said, Ye shall not diminish aught from your bricks, your daily tasks.20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh:21 and they said unto them, Jehovah look upon you, and judge: because ye have made our savor to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.

22 And Moses returned unto Jehovah, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou dealt ill with this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath dealt ill with this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.

Moisés y Aarón ante el faraón

1 Después Moisés y Aarón entraron a la presencia del faraón, y le dijeron:
—Jehová, el Dios de Israel, dice así: “Deja ir a mi pueblo para que me celebre una fiesta en el desierto.”

2 Pero el faraón respondió:
—¿Quién es Jehová para que yo oiga su voz y deje ir a Israel? Yo no conozco a Jehová, ni tampoco dejaré ir a Israel.

3 Ellos dijeron:
—El Dios de los hebreos se nos ha manifestado; iremos, pues, ahora, tres días de camino por el desierto, y ofreceremos sacrificios a Jehová, nuestro Dios, para que no venga sobre nosotros con peste o con espada.

4 Entonces el rey de Egipto les dijo:
—Moisés y Aarón, ¿por qué buscáis apartar al pueblo de su trabajo? Volved a vuestras tareas.

5 Dijo también el faraón:
—Ahora que el pueblo de la tierra es numeroso, vosotros queréis apartarlo de sus tareas.

6 Aquel mismo día el faraón dio esta orden a los cuadrilleros encargados de las labores del pueblo y a sus capataces:
7 —De aquí en adelante no daréis paja al pueblo para hacer ladrillo, como hasta ahora; que vayan ellos y recojan por sí mismos la paja.8 Les impondréis la misma tarea de ladrillo que hacían antes, y no les disminuiréis nada, pues están ociosos. Por eso claman diciendo: “Vamos y ofrezcamos sacrificios a nuestro Dios.”

9 Que se les aumente el trabajo, para que estén ocupados y no atiendan a palabras mentirosas.

10 Los cuadrilleros y sus capataces salieron y dijeron al pueblo:
—Así ha dicho el faraón: “Ya no os daré paja.

11 Id vosotros y recoged la paja donde la halléis, pero nada se disminuirá de vuestra tarea.”
12 Entonces el pueblo se esparció por toda la tierra de Egipto para recoger rastrojo en lugar de paja.

13 Y los cuadrilleros los apremiaban diciendo:
—Acabad vuestra obra, la tarea de cada día en su día, como cuando se os daba paja.

14 Y azotaban a los capataces de los hijos de Israel que los cuadrilleros del faraón habían puesto sobre ellos, y les decían:
—¿Por qué no habéis cumplido ni ayer ni hoy vuestra tarea de ladrillos como antes?

15 Los capataces de los hijos de Israel fueron a quejarse ante el faraón y le dijeron:
—¿Por qué tratas así a tus siervos?

16 No se da paja a tus siervos, y con todo nos dicen: “Haced el ladrillo.” Además, tus siervos son azotados, y el pueblo tuyo es el culpable.

17 Él respondió:
—Estáis ociosos, sí, ociosos, y por eso decís: “Vamos y ofrezcamos sacrificios a Jehová.”

18 Id, pues, ahora, y trabajad. No se os dará paja, y habéis de entregar la misma tarea de ladrillo.
19 Los capataces de los hijos de Israel se sintieron afligidos cuando les dijeron: «No se disminuirá nada de vuestro ladrillo, de la tarea de cada día.»20 Cuando salían de la presencia del faraón, se encontraron con Moisés y Aarón, que los estaban esperando,

21 y les dijeron:
—Que Jehová os examine y os juzgue, pues nos habéis hecho odiosos ante el faraón y sus siervos, y les habéis puesto la espada en la mano para que nos maten.

Jehová comisiona a Moisés y a Aarón

22 Entonces Moisés se volvió a Jehová y preguntó:
—Señor, ¿por qué afliges a este pueblo? ¿Para qué me enviaste?,

23 porque desde que yo fui al faraón para hablarle en tu nombre, ha afligido a este pueblo, y tú no has librado a tu pueblo.
