James 1

1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are of the Dispersion, greeting.2 Count it all joy, my brethren, when ye fall into manifold temptations;3 Knowing that the proving of your faith worketh patience.4 And let patience have its perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, lacking in nothing.5 But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.6 But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting: for he that doubteth is like the surge of the sea driven by the wind and tossed.7 For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord;8 a doubleminded man, unstable in all his ways.9 But let the brother of low degree glory in his high estate:10 and the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.11 For the sun ariseth with the scorching wind, and withereth the grass: and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his goings.12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he hath been approved, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to them that love him.13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God; for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempteth no man:14 but each man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed.15 Then the lust, when it hath conceived, beareth sin: and the sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.16 Be not deceived, my beloved brethren.17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, neither shadow that is cast by turning.18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.19 Ye know this, my beloved brethren. But let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:20 for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.21 Wherefore putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves.23 For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a mirror:24 for he beholdeth himself, and goeth away, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.25 But he that looketh into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and so continueth, being not a hearer that forgetteth but a doer that worketh, this man shall be blessed in his doing.26 If any man thinketh himself to be religious, while he bridleth not his tongue but deceiveth his heart, this man’s religion is vain.27 Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

Santiago 1

Saludo

1 Yo, Santiago,t siervo de Dios y del Señor Jesucristo, saludo a las doce tribus que están en la dispersión.

La sabiduría que viene de Dios

2 Hermanos míos, considérense muy dichosos cuando estén pasando por diversas pruebas.3 Bien saben que, cuando su fe es puesta a prueba, produce paciencia.4 Pero procuren que la paciencia complete su obra, para que sean perfectos y cabales, sin que les falta nada.

5 Si alguno de ustedes requiere de sabiduría, pídasela a Dios, y él se la dará, pues Dios se la da a todos en abundancia y sin hacer ningún reproche.6 Pero tiene que pedir con fe y sin dudar nada, porque el que duda es como las olas del mar, que el viento agita y lleva de un lado a otro.7 Quien sea así, no piense que recibirá del Señor cosa alguna,8 pues quienes titubean son inconstantes en todo lo que hacen.

9 El hermano pobre debe sentirse orgulloso cuando sea exaltado;10 el rico debe sentirse igual cuando sea humillado, porque las riquezas pasan como las flores del campo:11 en cuanto sale el sol, quemándolo todo con su calor, la hierba se marchitat y su flor se cae, con lo que su hermosa apariencia se desvanece. Así también se desvanecerá el rico en todas sus empresas.

Enfrentando las pruebas

12 Dichoso el que hace frente a la tentación; porque, pasada la prueba, se hace acreedor a la corona de vida, la cual Dios ha prometido dar a quienes lo aman.13 Cuando alguien sea tentado, no diga que ha sido tentado por Dios, porque Dios no tienta a nadie, ni tampoco el mal puede tentar a Dios.14 Al contrario, cada uno es tentado cuando se deja llevar y seducir por sus propios malos deseos.15 El fruto de estos malos deseos, una vez concebidos, es el pecado; y el fruto del pecado, una vez cometido, es la muerte.

16 Queridos hermanos míos, no se equivoquen.17 Toda buena dádiva y todo don perfecto descienden de lo alto, del Padre de las luces, en quien no hay cambio ni sombra de variación.18 Él, por su propia voluntad, nos hizo nacer por medio de la palabra de verdad, para que seamos los primeros frutos de su creación.

Poniendo en práctica la palabra

19 Por eso, amados hermanos míos, todos ustedes deben estar dispuestos a oír, pero ser lentos para hablar y para enojarse,20 porque quien se enoja no promueve la justicia de Dios.21 Así que despójense de toda impureza y de tanta maldad, y reciban con mansedumbre la palabra sembrada, que tiene el poder de salvarlos.

22 Pero pongan en práctica la palabra, y no se limiten sólo a oírla, pues se estarán engañando ustedes mismos.23 El que oye la palabra pero no la pone en práctica es como el que se mira a sí mismo en un espejo:24 se ve a sí mismo, pero en cuanto se va, se olvida de cómo es.25 En cambio, el que fija la mirada en la ley perfecta, que es la ley de la libertad, y no se aparta de ella ni se contenta sólo con oírla y olvidarla, sino que la practica, será dichoso en todo lo que haga.

26 Si alguno de ustedes cree ser religioso, pero no refrena su lengua, se engaña a sí mismo y su religión no vale nada.27 Delante de Dios, la religión pura y sin mancha consiste en ayudar a los huérfanos y a las viudas en sus aflicciones, y en mantenerse limpio de la maldad de este mundo.
