James 3

1 Be not many of you teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive heavier judgment.2 For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.3 Now if we put the horses’ bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also.4 Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth.5 So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire!6 And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell.7 For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind.8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is a restless evil, it is full of deadly poison.9 Therewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God:10 out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.11 Doth the fountain send forth from the same opening sweet water and bitter?12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine figs? Neither can salt water yield sweet.13 Who is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom.14 But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth.15 This wisdom is not a wisdom that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.16 For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed.17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy.18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace.

La lengua

1 Hermanos míos, no se convierta la mayoría de ustedes en maestros. Bien saben que el juicio que recibiremos será mayor.2 Todos cometemos muchos errores. Quien no comete errores en lo que dice, es una persona perfecta, y además capaz de dominar todo su cuerpo.3 A los caballos les ponemos un freno en la boca, para que nos obedezcan, y así podemos controlar todo su cuerpo.4 Y fíjense en los barcos: Aunque son muy grandes e impulsados por fuertes vientos, se les dirige por un timón muy pequeño, y el piloto los lleva por donde quiere.5 Así es la lengua. Aunque es un miembro muy pequeño, se jacta de grandes cosas. ¡Vean qué bosque tan grande puede incendiarse con un fuego tan pequeño!

6 Y la lengua es fuego; es un mundo de maldad. La lengua ocupa un lugar entre nuestros miembros, pero es capaz de contaminar todo el cuerpo; si el infierno la prende, puede inflamar nuestra existencia entera.7 La gente puede domesticar y, en efecto, ha domesticado, a toda clase de bestias, aves, serpientes y animales marinos,8 pero nadie puede domesticar a la lengua. Ésta es un mal indómito, que rebosa de veneno mortal.9 Con la lengua bendecimos al Dios y Padre, y con ella maldecimos a los seres humanos, que han sido creados a imagen de Dios.t10 De la misma boca salen bendiciones y maldiciones. Hermanos míos, ¡esto no puede seguir así!11 ¿Acaso de una misma fuente puede brotar agua dulce y agua amarga?12 No es posible, hermanos míos, que la higuera dé aceitunas, o que la vid dé higos. Ni tampoco puede ninguna fuente dar agua salada y agua dulce.

La sabiduría de lo alto

13 ¿Quién de ustedes es sabio y entendido? Demuéstrelo con su buena conducta, y por medio de actos realizados con la humildad propia de la sabiduría.14 Pero si ustedes abrigan en su corazón amargura, envidia y rivalidad, no tienen de qué presumir y están falseando la verdad.15 Esta clase de sabiduría no es la que desciende de lo alto, sino que es terrenal, estrictamente humana, y diabólica.16 Pues donde hay envidias y rivalidades, allí hay confusión y toda clase de mal.17 Pero la sabiduría que viene de lo alto es, ante todo, pura, y además pacífica, amable, benigna, llena de compasión y de buenos frutos, ecuánime y genuina.18 Y el fruto de la justicia se siembra en paz para los que trabajan por la paz.
