John 18

1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples.2 Now Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus oft-times resorted thither with his disciples.3 Judas then, having received the band of soldiers, and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.4 Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming upon him, went forth, and saith unto them, Whom seek ye?5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.6 When therefore he said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.7 Again therefore he asked them, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.8 Jesus answered, I told you that I am he; if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:9 that the word might be fulfilled which he spake, Of those whom thou hast given me I lost not one.10 Simon Peter therefore having a sword drew it, and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. Now the servant’s name was Malchus.11 Jesus therefore said unto Peter, Put up the sword into the sheath: the cup which the Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?12 So the band and the chief captain, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and bound him,13 and led him to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.14 Now Caiaphas was he that gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known unto the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;16 but Peter was standing at the door without. So the other disciple, who was known unto the high priest, went out and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.17 The maid therefore that kept the door saith unto Peter, Art thou also one of this man’s disciples? He saith, I am not.18 Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals; for it was cold; and they were warming themselves: and Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.19 The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his teaching.20 Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world; I ever taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and in secret spake I nothing.21 Why askest thou me? Ask them that have heard me, what I spake unto them: behold, these know the things which I said.22 And when he had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?24 Annas therefore sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore unto him, Art thou also one of his disciples? He denied, and said, I am not.26 One of the servants of the high priest, being a kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?27 Peter therefore denied again: and straightway the cock crew.28 They lead Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium: and it was early; and they themselves entered not into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the passover.29 Pilate therefore went out unto them, and saith, What accusation bring ye against this man?30 They answered and said unto him, If this man were not an evildoer, we should not have delivered him up unto thee.31 Pilate therefore said unto them, Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law. The Jews said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:32 that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying by what manner of death he should die.33 Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?34 Jesus answered, Sayest thou this of thyself, or did others tell it thee concerning me?35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end have I been born, and to this end am I come into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find no crime in him.39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?40 They cried out therefore again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.)

Arresto de Jesús

1 Luego de haber dicho estas cosas, Jesús salió con sus discípulos hacia el otro lado del torrente de Cedrón, donde había un huerto, y entró en él con sus discípulos.2 También Judas, el que le entregaba, conocía aquel lugar, porque muchas veces Jesús se había reunido allí con sus discípulos.3 Así que Judas tomó una compañía de soldados, y algunos alguaciles de los principales sacerdotes y de los fariseos, y fue allí con linternas, antorchas y armas.4 Pero Jesús, que sabía todas las cosas que le habían de sobrevenir, se adelantó y les preguntó: «¿A quién buscan?»5 Le respondieron: «A Jesús nazareno.» Jesús les dijo: «Yo soy.» Y con ellos estaba también Judas, el que lo entregaba.6 Cuando les dijo: «Yo soy», ellos retrocedieron y cayeron por tierra.7 Él volvió a preguntarles: «¿A quién buscan?» Y ellos dijeron: «A Jesús nazareno.»8 Respondió Jesús: «Ya les he dicho que yo soy. Si es a mí a quien buscan, dejen que éstos se vayan.»9 Esto, para que se cumpliera lo que había dicho: «De los que me diste, no perdí a ninguno.»10 Simón Pedro, que tenía una espada, la desenvainó e hirió con ella al siervo del sumo sacerdote, que se llamaba Malco, y le cortó la oreja derecha.11 Pero Jesús le dijo a Pedro: «Regresa la espada a su vaina. ¿Acaso no he de beber la copat que el Padre me ha dado?»

12 Entonces la compañía de soldados, el tribuno y los alguaciles de los judíos aprehendieron a Jesús. Lo ataron13 y lo llevaron primeramente a Anás, que era suegro de Caifás, porque ese año era sumo sacerdote.14 Caifás era el que había aconsejado a los judíos que era conveniente que un solo hombre muriera por el pueblo.t

15 Simón Pedro y otro discípulo seguían a Jesús. Como el otro discípulo era conocido del sumo sacerdote, entró con Jesús al patio del sumo sacerdote;16 mientras que Pedro se quedó afuera, a la entrada. Pero salió el discípulo que era conocido del sumo sacerdote, le habló a la portera, e hizo que Pedro entrara.17 Entonces la portera le dijo a Pedro: «¿Acaso no eres tú también uno de los discípulos de este hombre?» Y él dijo: «No lo soy.»18 Los siervos y los alguaciles, que habían encendido un fuego porque hacía frío y se calentaban, estaban de pie; y también de pie, calentándose con ellos, estaba Pedro.

Anás interroga a Jesús

19 El sumo sacerdote preguntó a Jesús acerca de sus discípulos y de su enseñanza.20 Jesús le respondió: «Yo he hablado al mundo abiertamente. Siempre he enseñado en la sinagoga y en el templo, donde se reúnen todos los judíos. Nunca he dicho nada en secreto.21 ¿Por qué me preguntas a mí? Pregúntales a los que han oído, de qué les he hablado. Ellos saben lo que he dicho.»22 Al decir esto Jesús, uno de los alguaciles, que estaba allí, le dio una bofetada y le dijo: «¿Y así le respondes al sumo sacerdote?»23 Jesús le dijo: «Si he hablado mal, señálame el mal; pero si he hablado bien, ¿por qué me golpeas?»24 Entonces Anás lo envió atado a Caifás, el sumo sacerdote.

Pedro niega a Jesús

25 Pedro estaba allí de pie, calentándose, y le dijeron: «¿Acaso no eres tú uno de sus discípulos?» Él lo negó, y dijo: «No lo soy.»26 Uno de los siervos del sumo sacerdote, que era pariente de aquel a quien Pedro le había cortado la oreja, le dijo: «¿Qué, no te vi yo en el huerto con él?»27 Pedro lo negó otra vez; y enseguida cantó el gallo.

Jesús ante Pilato

28 Llevaron a Jesús de la casa de Caifás al pretorio. Era de mañana, y ellos no entraron en el pretorio, para no contaminarse y así poder comer la pascua.29 Entonces Pilato salió a preguntarles: «¿De qué acusan a este hombre?»30 Ellos le dijeron: «Si éste no fuera un malhechor, no te lo habríamos entregado.»31 Pero Pilato les dijo: «Llévenselo ustedes, y júzguenlo de acuerdo con su ley.» Y los judíos le dijeron: «A nosotros no se nos permite dar muerte a nadie.»32 Esto, para que se cumpliera la palabra que Jesús había dicho, y en la que daba a entender de qué muerte iba a morir.t

33 Pilato volvió a entrar en el pretorio; llamó entonces a Jesús, y le preguntó: «¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos?»34 Jesús le respondió: «¿Dices tú esto por ti mismo, o te lo han dicho otros de mí?»35 Pilato le respondió: «¿Soy yo acaso judío? Tu nación, y los principales sacerdotes, te han puesto en mis manos. ¿Qué has hecho?»36 Respondió Jesús: «Mi reino no es de este mundo. Si mi reino fuera de este mundo, mis servidores lucharían para que yo no fuera entregado a los judíos. Pero mi reino no es de aquí.»37 Le dijo entonces Pilato: «¿Así que tú eres rey?» Respondió Jesús: «Tú dices que yo soy rey. Yo para esto he nacido, y para esto he venido al mundo: para dar testimonio de la verdad. Todo aquel que es de la verdad, oye mi voz.»

38 Le dijo Pilato: «¿Y qué es la verdad?»
Y dicho esto, salió otra vez a decirles a los judíos: «Yo no hallo en él ningún delito.39 Pero ustedes tienen la costumbre de que les suelte un preso en la pascua. ¿Quieren que les suelte al Rey de los judíos?»40 Todos ellos gritaron de nuevo, y dijeron: «¡No sueltes a éste! ¡Suelta a Barrabás!» Y Barrabás era un ladrón.
