John 19

1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and arrayed him in a purple garment;3 and they came unto him, and said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they struck him with their hands.4 And Pilate went out again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him out to you, that ye may know that I find no crime in him.5 Jesus therefore came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold, the man!6 When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him! Pilate saith unto them, Take him yourselves, and crucify him: for I find no crime in him.7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.8 When Pilate therefore heard this saying, he was the more afraid;9 and he entered into the Praetorium again, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.10 Pilate therefore saith unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? Knowest thou not that I have power to release thee, and have power to crucify thee?11 Jesus answered him, Thou wouldest have no power against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath greater sin.12 Upon this Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou release this man, thou art not Caesar’s friend: every one that maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.13 When Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment-seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.14 Now it was the Preparation of the passover: it was about the sixth hour. And he saith unto the Jews, Behold, your King!15 They therefore cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him! Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.16 Then therefore he delivered him unto them to be crucified.17 They took Jesus therefore: and he went out, bearing the cross for himself, unto the place called The place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha:18 where they crucified him, and with him two others, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.19 And Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. And there was written, JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.20 This title therefore read many of the Jews, for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city; and it was written in Hebrew, and in Latin, and in Greek.21 The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.23 The soldiers therefore, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also the coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.24 They said therefore one to another, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my garments among them, And upon my vesture did they cast lots.

25 These things therefore the soldiers did. But there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold, thy mother! And from that hour the disciple took her unto his own home.28 After this Jesus, knowing that all things are now finished, that the scripture might be accomplished, saith, I thirst.29 There was set there a vessel full of vinegar: so they put a sponge full of the vinegar upon hyssop, and brought it to his mouth.30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.31 The Jews therefore, because it was the Preparation, that the bodies should not remain on the cross upon the sabbath (for the day of that sabbath was a high day), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.32 The soldiers therefore came, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him:33 but when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:34 howbeit one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and straightway there came out blood and water.35 And he that hath seen hath borne witness, and his witness is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye also may believe.36 For these things came to pass, that the scripture might be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.38 And after these things Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked of Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took away his body.39 And there came also Nicodemus, he who at the first came to him by night, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds.40 So they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new tomb wherein was never man yet laid.42 There then because of the Jews’ Preparation (for the tomb was nigh at hand) they laid Jesus.

1 Entonces Pilato tomó a Jesús y lo azotó.2 Y los soldados tejieron una corona de espinas, se la pusieron sobre la cabeza, y lo vistieron con un manto de púrpura;3 y le decían: «¡Salve, Rey de los judíos!», y le daban de bofetadas.4 Pilato salió otra vez, y les dijo: «Miren, lo he traído aquí afuera, ante ustedes, para que entiendan que no hallo en él ningún delito.»5 Jesús salió, portando la corona de espinas y el manto de púrpura. Y Pilato les dijo: «¡Aquí está el hombre!»6 Cuando los principales sacerdotes y los alguaciles lo vieron, a gritos dijeron: «¡Crucifícalo! ¡Crucifícalo!» Pero Pilato les dijo: «Pues llévenselo, y crucifíquenlo ustedes; porque yo no hallo en él ningún delito.»7 Los judíos le respondieron: «Nosotros tenemos una ley y, según nuestra ley, éste debe morir porque a sí mismo se hizo Hijo de Dios.»8 Cuando Pilato oyó decir esto, tuvo más miedo.9 Y entró otra vez en el pretorio, y le dijo a Jesús: «¿De dónde eres tú?» Pero Jesús no le respondió.10 Entonces le dijo Pilato: «¿A mí no me respondes? ¿Acaso no sabes que tengo autoridad para dejarte en libertad, y que también tengo autoridad para crucificarte?»11 Jesús le respondió: «No tendrías sobre mí ninguna autoridad, si no te fuera dada de arriba. Por eso, mayor pecado ha cometido el que me ha entregado a ti.»

12 A partir de entonces Pilato procuraba ponerlo en libertad; pero los judíos gritaban y decían: «Si dejas libre a éste, no eres amigo del César. Todo el que a sí mismo se hace rey, se opone al César.»13 Al oír esto, Pilato llevó a Jesús afuera y se sentó en el tribunal, en el lugar conocido como «el Enlosado», que en hebreo es «Gabata».14 Eran casi las doce del día de la preparación de la pascua. Allí les dijo a los judíos: «¡Aquí está el Rey de ustedes!»15 Pero ellos gritaron: «¡Fuera, fuera! ¡Crucifícalo!» Pilato les dijo: «¿Y he de crucificar al Rey de ustedes?» Pero los principales sacerdotes respondieron: «No tenemos más rey que el César.»16 Entonces Pilato se lo entregó a ellos, para que lo crucificaran. Y ellos tomaron a Jesús y se lo llevaron.

Crucifixión y muerte de Jesús

17 Con su cruz a cuestas, Jesús salió al llamado «Lugar de la Calavera», que en hebreo es «Gólgota»,18 y allí lo crucificaron. Con él estaban otros dos, uno a cada lado suyo, y Jesús en medio de ellos.19 Además, Pilato escribió también un título, que puso sobre la cruz, el cual decía: JESÚS NAZARENO, REY DE LOS JUDÍOS.20 Y muchos de los judíos leyeron este título, porque el lugar donde Jesús fue crucificado estaba cerca de la ciudad. Este título estaba escrito en hebreo, griego y latín.21 Los principales sacerdotes de los judíos le dijeron a Pilato: «No escribas “Rey de los judíos”; sino que él dijo: “Soy Rey de los judíos”.»22 Pero Pilato les respondió: «Lo que he escrito, escrito queda.»

23 Cuando los soldados crucificaron a Jesús, tomaron sus vestidos y los partieron en cuatro, una parte para cada soldado. Tomaron también su túnica, la cual no tenía ninguna costura, y de arriba abajo era de un solo tejido.

24 Y dijeron entre sí: «No la partamos. Más bien, echemos suertes, a ver quién se queda con ella.» Esto fue así para que se cumpliera la Escritura, que dice:«Repartieron entre sí mis vestidos,
Y sobre mi ropa echaron suertes.»t

Y así lo hicieron los soldados.25 Junto a la cruz de Jesús estaban su madre, y la hermana de su madre, María mujer de Cleofas, y María Magdalena.26 Cuando Jesús vio a su madre, y vio también presente al discípulo a quien él amaba, le dijo a su madre: «Mujer, ahí tienes a tu hijo.»27 Y al discípulo le dijo: «Ahí tienes a tu madre.» Y a partir de ese momento el discípulo la recibió en su casa.

28 Después de esto, y como Jesús sabía que ya todo estaba consumado, dijo «Tengo sed», para que la Escritura se cumpliera.t29 Había allí una vasija llena de vinagre; entonces ellos empaparon una esponja en el vinagre, la pusieron en un hisopo, y se la acercaron a la boca.30 Cuando Jesús probó el vinagre, dijo «Consumado es»; luego inclinó la cabeza y entregó el espíritu.

El costado de Jesús traspasado

31 Como era la preparación de la pascua, y a fin de que los cuerpos no se quedaran en la cruz durante el día de reposo (ya que aquel día de reposo era de gran solemnidad), los judíos le rogaron a Pilato que se les quebraran las piernas y se les quitara de allí.32 Entonces los soldados fueron y le quebraron las piernas al primero, lo mismo que al otro que había sido crucificado con él.33 Cuando llegaron a Jesús, como lo vieron ya muerto, no le quebraron las piernas.34 Pero uno de los soldados le abrió el costado con una lanza, y al instante le brotó sangre y agua.35 El que vio esto da testimonio, y su testimonio es verdadero; y él sabe que dice la verdad, para que ustedes también crean.36 Porque estas cosas sucedieron para que se cumpliera la Escritura: «No será quebrado ningún hueso suyo.»t37 Además, hay también otra Escritura que dice: «Mirarán al que traspasaron.»t

Jesús es sepultado

38 José de Arimatea era discípulo de Jesús, aunque por miedo a los judíos lo mantenía en secreto. Después de todo esto, José le rogó a Pilato que le permitiera llevarse el cuerpo de Jesús, y Pilato se lo permitió. Entonces José fue y se llevó el cuerpo de Jesús.39 También Nicodemo, el que antes había visitado a Jesús de noche,t llegó con un compuesto de mirra y de áloes, como de treinta kilos.40 Tomaron el cuerpo de Jesús y lo envolvieron en lienzos con especias aromáticas, como acostumbran los judíos sepultar a sus muertos.41 En el lugar donde Jesús fue crucificado, había un huerto, y en el huerto había un sepulcro nuevo, en el que aún no habían puesto a nadie.42 Y por causa de la preparación de la pascua de los judíos, y porque aquel sepulcro estaba cerca, pusieron allí a Jesús.
