John 5

1 After these things there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches.3 In these lay a multitude of them that were sick, blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the waters stepped in was made whole, with whatsoever disease he was holden.5 And a certain man was there, who had been thirty and eight years in his infirmity.6 When Jesus saw him lying, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wouldest thou be made whole?7 The sick man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.8 Jesus saith unto him, Arise, take up thy bed, and walk.9 And straightway the man was made whole, and took up his bed and walked. Now it was the sabbath on that day.10 So the Jews said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath, and it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed.11 But he answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.12 They asked him, Who is the man that said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?13 But he that was healed knew not who it was; for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in the place.14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing befall thee.15 The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him whole.16 And for this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath.17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh even until now, and I work.18 For this cause therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only brake the sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God.19 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father doing: for what things soever he doeth, these the Son also doeth in like manner.20 For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth him all things that himself doeth: and greater works than these will he show him, that ye may marvel.21 For as the Father raiseth the dead and giveth them life, even so the Son also giveth life to whom he will.22 For neither doth the Father judge any man, but he hath given all judgment unto the Son;23 that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son honoreth not the Father that sent him.24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath eternal life, and cometh not into judgment, but hath passed out of death into life.25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live.26 For as the Father hath life in himself, even so gave he to the Son also to have life in himself:27 and he gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man.28 Marvel not at this: for the hour cometh, in which all that are in the tombs shall hear his voice,29 and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.30 I can of myself do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is righteous; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.32 It is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.33 Ye have sent unto John, and he hath borne witness unto the truth.34 But the witness which I receive is not from man: howbeit I say these things, that ye may be saved.35 He was the lamp that burneth and shineth; and ye were willing to rejoice for a season in his light.36 But the witness which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father hath given me to accomplish, the very works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.37 And the Father that sent me, he hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form.38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he sent, him ye believe not.39 Ye search the scriptures, because ye think that in them ye have eternal life; and these are they which bear witness of me;40 and ye will not come to me, that ye may have life.41 I receive not glory from men.42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in yourselves.43 I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.44 How can ye believe, who receive glory one of another, and the glory that cometh from the only God ye seek not?45 Think not that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, on whom ye have set your hope.46 For if ye believed Moses, ye would believe me; for he wrote of me.47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

El paralítico de Betesda

1 Después de estas cosas había una fiesta de los judíos, y Jesús subió a Jerusalén.

2 En Jerusalén, cerca de la puerta de las ovejas, hay un estanque, llamado en hebreo Betesda, el cual tiene cinco pórticos.3 En ellos yacían muchos enfermos, ciegos, cojos y paralíticos [que esperaban el movimiento del agua,4 porque un ángel descendía al estanque de vez en cuando, y agitaba el agua; y el primero que descendía al estanque después del movimiento del agua, quedaba sano de cualquier enfermedad que tuviera.]t5 Allí había un hombre que hacía treinta y ocho años que estaba enfermo.6 Cuando Jesús lo vio acostado, y se enteró de que llevaba ya mucho tiempo así, le dijo: «¿Quieres ser sano?»7 El enfermo le respondió: «Señor, no tengo a nadie que me meta en el estanque cuando el agua se agita; y en lo que llego, otro baja antes que yo.»8 Jesús le dijo: «Levántate, toma tu lecho, y vete.»9 Y al instante aquel hombre fue sanado, y tomó su lecho y se fue. Pero aquel día era día de reposo,10 así que los judíos le dijeron a aquel que había sido sanado: «Hoy es día de reposo; no te está permitido llevar tu lecho.»t11 Pero él les respondió: «El mismo que me sanó fue el que me dijo: “Toma tu lecho y anda”.»12 Entonces le preguntaron: «¿Y quién fue el que te dijo: “Toma tu lecho y anda”?»13 Pero el que había sido sanado no sabía quién lo había sanado, pues Jesús se había apartado de la gente que estaba en aquel lugar.14 Después Jesús lo encontró en el templo, y le dijo: «Como puedes ver, has sido sanado; así que no peques más, para que no te sobrevenga algo peor.»15 Aquel hombre se fue, y les hizo saber a los judíos que el que lo había sanado era Jesús,16 y por eso los judíos lo perseguían y procuraban matarlo, porque hacía esto en el día de reposo.17 Pero Jesús les respondió: «Hasta ahora mi Padre trabaja, y yo también trabajo.»18 Por esto los judíos con más ganas procuraban matarlo, porque no sólo quebrantaba el día de reposo sino que, además, decía que Dios mismo era su Padre, con lo cual se hacía igual a Dios.

La autoridad del Hijo

19 Entonces Jesús les dijo: «De cierto, de cierto les digo: El Hijo no puede hacer nada por sí mismo, sino lo que ve que el Padre hace; porque todo lo que el Padre hace, eso mismo lo hace el Hijo.20 Y es que el Padre ama al Hijo, y le muestra todo lo que él hace; y mayores obras que éstas le mostrará, para el asombro de ustedes.21 Porque así como el Padre levanta a los muertos, y les da vida, así también el Hijo da vida a los que él quiere.22 Pues el Padre no juzga a nadie, sino que todo el juicio se lo ha dado al Hijo,23 para que todos honren al Hijo tal y como honran al Padre. El que no honra al Hijo, no honra al Padre que lo envió.

24 De cierto, de cierto les digo: El que oye mi palabra, y cree al que me envió, tiene vida eterna; y no será condenado, sino que ha pasado de muerte a vida.25 De cierto, de cierto les digo: La hora viene, y ya llegó, cuando los muertos oirán la voz del Hijo de Dios; y los que la oigan vivirán.26 Porque así como el Padre tiene vida en sí mismo, así también le ha dado al Hijo el tener vida en sí mismo;27 y también le dio autoridad de hacer juicio, por cuanto es el Hijo del Hombre.28 No se asombren de esto: Vendrá el tiempo cuando todos los que están en los sepulcros oirán su voz;29 y los que hicieron lo bueno, saldrán a resurrección de vida; pero los que hicieron lo malo, a resurrección de condenación.t

Testigos de Cristo

30 »Yo no puedo hacer nada por mí mismo. Yo juzgo según lo que oigo; y mi juicio es justo, porque no busco hacer mi voluntad, sino hacer la voluntad del que me envió.31 Si yo doy testimonio acerca de mí mismo, mi testimonio no es verdadero;32 Pero el que da testimonio acerca de mí es otro, y yo sé que el testimonio que de mí da es verdadero.33 Ustedes enviaron mensajeros a Juan, y él dio testimonio de la verdad.t34 Yo no recibo el testimonio de ningún hombre, sino que digo esto para que ustedes sean salvos.35 Juan era una antorcha que ardía y alumbraba, y por algún tiempo ustedes quisieron regocijarse en su luz.36 Pero yo cuento con un testimonio mayor que el de Juan, y son las obras que el Padre me dio para que las llevara a cabo. Las obras mismas que yo hago son las que dan testimonio de mí, y de que el Padre me ha enviado.37 También el Padre, que me envió, ha dado testimonio de mí.t Ustedes nunca han oído su voz, ni han visto su aspecto,38 ni tienen su palabra permanentemente en ustedes, porque a quien él envió ustedes no le creen.39 Ustedes escudriñan las Escrituras, porque les parece que en ellas tienen la vida eterna; ¡y son ellas las que dan testimonio de mí!40 Pero ustedes no quieren venir a mí para que tengan vida.41 Yo no recibo gloria de parte de los hombres.42 Pero yo los conozco a ustedes, y sé que el amor de Dios no habita en ustedes.43 Yo he venido en nombre de mi Padre, y ustedes no me reciben; pero si otro viniera en su propio nombre, a ése sí lo recibirían.44 ¿Y cómo pueden ustedes creer, si se honran los unos de los otros, pero no buscan la honra que viene del Dios único?45 No piensen que yo voy a acusarlos delante del Padre. Hay alguien que sí los acusa, y es Moisés, en quien ustedes tienen puesta su esperanza.46 Si ustedes le creyeran a Moisés, me creerían a mí, porque él escribió acerca de mí.47 Pero si no creen a sus escritos, ¿cómo van a creer a mis palabras?»
