Jonah 1

1 Now the word of Jehovah came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah.4 But Jehovah sent out a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god; and they cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it unto them. But Jonah was gone down into the innermost parts of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.7 And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; what is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?9 And he said unto them, I am a Hebrew; and I fear Jehovah, the God of heaven, who hath made the sea and the dry land.10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, What is this that thou hast done? For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Jehovah, because he had told them.11 Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not: for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.14 Wherefore they cried unto Jehovah, and said, We beseech thee, O Jehovah, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood; for thou, O Jehovah, hast done as it pleased thee.15 So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging.16 Then the men feared Jehovah exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice unto Jehovah, and made vows.17 And Jehovah prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Jonás 1

Jonás huye de Dios

1 La palabra del Señor vino a Jonást hijo de Amitay, y le dijo:

2 «Levántate y ve a la gran ciudad de Nínive, y predica contra ella, porque hasta mí ha llegado la maldad de sus habitantes.»

3 Y Jonás se levantó para irse a Tarsis y huir de la presencia del Señor. Descendió a Jope, y halló una nave que partía para Tarsis. Entonces pagó su pasaje y, para alejarse de la presencia del Señor, subió a bordo, dispuesto a irse con ellos a Tarsis.

4 Pero el Señor hizo que en el mar se levantara un fuerte viento, y se desató una tempestad tan grande que parecía que la nave se iba a partir.5 Los marineros tenían mucho miedo, y cada uno de ellos clamaba a su dios. Entonces echaron al mar los enseres que había en la nave, para deshacerse de ellos. Jonás, en cambio, había bajado al interior de la nave y se había echado a dormir.

6 Así que el patrón de la nave se le acercó y le dijo:
«¿Qué te pasa, dormilón? ¡Levántate, y clama a tu Dios! Tal vez tenga compasión de nosotros, y no pereceremos.»

7 Los marineros decían cada uno a sus compañeros:
«Vengan, echemos suertes para saber por culpa de quién nos ha sobrevenido este mal.»
Y echaron suertes, y la suerte recayó sobre Jonás.

8 Entonces ellos le dijeron:
«Dinos ahora por qué nos ha sobrevenido este mal. ¿A qué te dedicas? ¿De dónde vienes? ¿Cuál es tu país? ¿De qué pueblo eres?»

9 Y él les respondió:
«Soy hebreo, y temo al Señor, Dios de los cielos, que hizo el mar y la tierra.»

10 Aquellos hombres tuvieron mucho miedo, y le dijeron:
«¿Por qué has hecho esto?»
Y como sabían que Jonás huía de la presencia del Señor, pues él mismo se lo había dicho,

11 le dijeron:
«¿Qué haremos contigo para que el mar se calme?»
Y como el mar se iba embraveciendo más y más,

12 Jonás les respondió:
«Pues agárrenme y échenme al mar, y el mar se calmará. Yo sé bien que por mi culpa les ha sobrevenido esta gran tempestad.»

13 Aquellos hombres se esforzaron para llevar la nave a tierra, pero no pudieron porque el mar se iba embraveciendo más y más.

14 Entonces clamaron al Señor y dijeron:
«Señor, te rogamos que no nos dejes perecer por causa de este hombre, ni nos culpes de derramar sangre inocente, pues tú, Señor, haces lo que te parece mejor.»

15 Entonces tomaron a Jonás y lo arrojaron al mar, y la furia del mar se calmó.16 Y aquellos hombres sintieron gran temor del Señor, y le ofrecieron un sacrificio y le hicieron votos.17 Pero el Señor tenía preparado un gran pez, para que se tragara a Jonás; y Jonás estuvo en el vientre del pez tres días y tres noches.t
