Joshua 10

1  WHEN ADONI-ZEDEK king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed it, doing to Jericho and its king as he had done to Ai and its king, and how the residents of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,2  He feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty.3  So Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,4  Come up to me and help me, and let us smite Gibeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and with the Israelites.5  Then the five kings of the Amorites--the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon--gathered their forces and went up with all their armies and encamped before Gibeon to fight against it.6  And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal, saying, Do not relax your hand from your servants; come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the hill country are gathered against us.7  So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the warriors with him and all the mighty men of valor.8  And the Lord said to Joshua, Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hand; there shall not a man of them stand before you.9  So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having gone up from Gilgal all night.10  And the Lord caused [the enemies] to panic before Israel, who slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon and chased them along the way that goes up to Beth-horon and smote them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.11  As they fled before Israel, while they were descending [the pass] to Beth-horon, the Lord cast great stones from the heavens on them as far as Azekah, killing them. More died because of the hailstones than the Israelites slew with the sword.12  Then Joshua spoke to the Lord on the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, be silent and stand still at Gibeon, and you, moon, in the Valley of Ajalon!13  And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the nation took vengeance upon their enemies. Is not this written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of the heavens and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.14  There was no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man. For the Lord fought for Israel.15  Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.16  Those five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave of Makkedah.17  And it was told Joshua, The five kings are hidden in the cave at Makkedah.18  Joshua said, Roll great stones to the cave’s mouth, and set men to guard them.19  But do not stay. Pursue your enemies and fall upon their rear; do not allow them to enter their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.20  When Joshua and the Israelites had ended slaying them until they were wiped out and the remnant remaining of them had entered into fortified cities,21  All the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace; none moved his tongue against any of the Israelites.22  Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave and bring out those five kings to me from the cave.23  They brought the five kings out of the cave to him--the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon.24  When they brought out those kings to Joshua, [he] called for all the Israelites and told the commanders of the men of war who went with him, Come, put your feet on the necks of these kings. And they came and put their feet on the [kings’] necks.25  Joshua said to them, Fear not nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage. For thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom you fight.26  Afterward Joshua smote and slew them and hanged their bodies on five trees, and they hung on the trees until evening.27  At sunset Joshua ordered and they took the bodies down from the trees and cast them into the cave where the kings had hidden and laid great stones on the cave’s mouth, which remain to this very day.28  Joshua took Makkedah that day and smote it and its king with the sword and utterly destroyed everyone in it. He left none remaining. And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho. 29  Then Joshua and all Israel went from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked Libnah.30  And the Lord gave it also and its king into Israel’s hands, and Joshua smote it with the sword, and all the people in it. He left none remaining in it. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.31  And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish and encamped against it and attacked it.32  And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hands of Israel, and Joshua took it on the second day and smote it with the sword, and all the people in it, as he had done to Libnah.33  Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish, and Joshua smote him and his people--until he had left none remaining.34  From Lachish Joshua and all Israel went on to Eglon, laid siege to it, and attacked it.35  And they took it that day and smote it with the sword and utterly destroyed all who were in it that day, as he had done to Lachish.36  Then Joshua with all Israel went up from Eglon to Hebron, and they attacked it37  And took it and smote it with the sword, and its king and all its towns and everyone in it. He left none remaining, as he had done to Eglon, and utterly destroyed it and all its people.38  And Joshua and all Israel with him returned to Debir and attacked it.39  And he took it, with its king and all its towns, and they smote them with the sword and utterly destroyed everyone in it. He left none remaining. As he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and its king.40  So Joshua smote all the land, the hill country, the South, the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord, the God of Israel, commanded. 41  And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even to Gaza, and all the country of Goshen even to Gibeon.42  Joshua took all these kings and their land at one time, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.43  And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

Conquista del sur de Palestina. Coalición de los cinco reyes

1 Cuando Adonisédec, rey de Jerusalén*, se enteró de que Josué había conquistado Ay y la había consagrado al exterminiot, (tratando a Ay y a su rey lo mismo que había tratado a Jericó y a su rey), y de que los habitantes de Gabaón habían concertado un pacto con Israel, conviviendo con los israelitas,

2 le entró mucho miedo. Y es que Gabaón era una de las más importantes ciudades reales, mayor incluso que Ay, y todos sus hombres eran gente valiente.t

3 Entonces Adonisédec, rey de Jerusalén, mandó este mensaje a Oán, Pirán, Jafia y Debir, reyes respectivamente de Hebrón, Jarmut, Laquis y Eglónt:

4 — Vengan en mi auxilio, a ver si derrotamos a Gabaón, pues ha firmado un tratado de paz con Josué y con los israelitas.t

6 Los gabaonitas mandaron mensajeros al campamento de Guilgal para decir a Josué:
— No abandones a tus siervos a su suerte. Ven deprisa hasta nosotros y sálvanos. Socórrenos, porque se han aliado contra nosotros todos los reyes amorreos de la montaña.
7 Acudió Josué desde Guilgal con los mejores guerreros de su ejército

8 y el Señor le dijo:
— No les tengas miedo, porque los he entregado en tus manos; ninguno de ellos podrá hacerte frente.
9 Caminó Josué toda la noche desde Guilgalt y cayó sobre ellos de improviso. 10 El Señor hizo que Israel los desbaratara y les infligiera una severa derrota en Gabaón, persiguiéndolos y destrozándolos por el camino de la cuesta de Bet Jorón, hasta llegar a Acecá y Maquedát.t 11 Y sucedió que, mientras huían ante Israel por la bajada de Bet Jorón, el Señor lanzó desde el cielo sobre ellos grandes piedrast hasta Acecá, ocasionando su muerte. Fueron más los que murieron por las piedras que los que murieron por la espada de los israelitas.

12 Fue aquel mismo día, el día en que el Señor entregó a los amorreos en manos de los israelitas, cuando Josué se dirigió al Señor, en presencia de Israel, y dijo:
“Detente, sol, en Gabaón,
y tú, luna, sobre el valle de Ayalón”.

13 Y el sol se detuvo y la luna se paró
hasta que el pueblo se vengó de sus enemigos.
¿No es así como está escrito esto en el Libro del Justot: “El sol se paró en medio del cielo y tardó un día entero en ponerse”?t 14 No hubo antes ni ha habido después un día como aquel, en que el Señor obedeciera a un ser humano. Es que el Señor combatía en favor de Israel.t

15 A continuación Josué regresó con todo Israel al campamento de Guilgal.

Muerte de los cinco reyes

17 Y se informó a Josué:
— Han sido descubiertos los cinco reyes; están escondidos en la cueva de Maquedá.

18 Josué ordenó:
— Hagan rodar unas piedras grandes hasta la boca de la cueva y custódienla con algunos efectivos.

19 Y ustedes muévanse y persigan a sus enemigos; córtenles la retirada y no los dejen entrar en las ciudades de ellos, porque el Señor Dios de ustedes los ha entregado en sus manos.
20 Cuando Josué y los israelitas los derrotaron totalmente, hasta acabar con ellos, los que lograron escapar se refugiaron en las plazas fuertes. 21 Todo el pueblo regresó sano y salvo al campamento de Josué, en Maquedá. Y no hubo quien se atreviera a oponerset a los israelitas.

22 Dijo entonces Josué:
— Abran la boca de la cueva y sáquenme de ella a esos cinco reyes.
23 Así lo hicieron: sacaron de la cueva a los cinco reyes: al rey de Jerusalén, al rey de Hebrón, al rey de Jarmut, al rey de Laquis y al rey de Eglón.

24 Una vez fuera, se los presentaron a Josué que convocó a todos los israelitas y dijo a los capitanes de tropa que lo acompañaban:
— Acérquense y pongan sus pies sobre la nucat de esos reyes.
Ellos se acercaron y pusieron los pies sobre las nucas de los reyes.

25 Josué añadió:
— Sean decididos y valientes; no tengan miedo ni se acobarden, pues así tratará el Señor a todos los enemigos contra los que tienen que combatir.t
26 Acto seguido, Josué los hirió de muerte y los mandó colgar de cinco árboles, permaneciendo así hasta el atardecer.

27 Al ponerse el sol, Josué ordenó que los descolgaran de los árboles y los arrojaran a la cueva en la que se habían ocultado. A la boca de la cueva pusieron unas grandes piedras que allí están todavía hoy. t

Ciudades conquistadas en el sur

30 El Señor entregó la ciudad junto con su rey en manos de los israelitas, que la pasaron a cuchillo con todos los seres vivos que había en ella: no dejaron ni uno solo con vida. Josué trató a su rey como había tratado al rey de Jericó.
31 Desde Libná Josué, con todo Israel, se dirigió a Laquis, sitiándola y atacándola. 32 El Señor entregó Laquis en manos de los israelitas, que la conquistaron en dos días y la pasaron a cuchillo con todos los seres vivos que había en ella, del mismo modo que habían hecho con Libná.

33 Entonces Horán, rey de Guécer, acudió en ayuda de Laquis, pero Josué lo derrotó a él y a su ejército, sin dejar un solo superviviente.
34 Desde Laquis Josué, con todo Israel, se dirigió a Eglón, sitiándola y atacándola.

35 La conquistaron aquel mismo día y la pasaron a cuchillo. Josué consagró al exterminio aquel día a todos los seres vivos que había en ella, del mismo modo que había hecho con Laquis.
36 Desde Eglón Josué, con todo Israel, se dirigió a Hebrón a la que atacót

37 y conquistó, pasándola a cuchillo, junto con su rey, con toda la población vecina y con todos los seres vivos que había en ella. No dejó ni un superviviente, igual que había hecho con Eglón. La consagró al exterminio, así como a todos los seres vivientes que había en ella.
38 Finalmente Josué, con todo Israel, se dirigió contra Debir y la atacó.

39 Se apoderó de ella, de su rey y de toda la población vecina, pasándola a cuchillo y consagrando al exterminio a todos los seres vivos que había en ella, sin dejar uno solo con vida. Trató a Debir y a su rey como había tratado tanto a Hebrón como a Libná y a su rey.
