Judges 1

1 And it came to pass after the death of Joshua, that the children of Israel asked of Jehovah, saying, Who shall go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?2 And Jehovah said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.3 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.4 And Judah went up; and Jehovah delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they smote of them in Bezek ten thousand men.5 And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.6 But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.7 And Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their food under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

8 And the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.9 And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites that dwelt in the hill-country, and in the South, and in the lowland.10 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron (now the name of Hebron beforetime was Kiriath-arba); and they smote Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

11 And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir. (Now the name of Debir beforetime was Kiriath-sepher.)12 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.14 And it came to pass, when she came unto him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she alighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wouldest thou?15 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing; for that thou hast set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

16 And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ brother-in-law, went up out of the city of palm-trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt with the people.17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they smote the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.18 Also Judah took Gaza with the border thereof, and Ashkelon with the border thereof, and Ekron with the border thereof.19 And Jehovah was with Judah; and drove out the inhabitants of the hill-country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.20 And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses had spoken: and he drove out thence the three sons of Anak.21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

22 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el; and Jehovah was with them.23 And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Beth-el. (Now the name of the city beforetime was Luz.)24 And the watchers saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Show us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with thee.25 And he showed them the entrance into the city; and they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family.26 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof unto this day.

27 And Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its towns, nor of Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.28 And it came to pass, when Israel was waxed strong, that they put the Canaanites to taskwork, and did not utterly drive them out.

29 And Ephraim drove not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

30 Zebulun drove not out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became subject to taskwork.

31 Asher drove not out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob;32 but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.

33 Naphtali drove not out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to taskwork.

34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill-country; for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley;35 but the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to taskwork.36 And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.

I.— COMPLEMENTOS AL LIBRO DE JOSUÉ (1,1—2,5)

Establecimiento de Judá, Simeón, Caleb y los quenitas

1 Muerto Josué, los israelitas* hicieron esta consulta al Señort:
— ¿Quién de nosotros será el primero en combatir contra los cananeos?t

2 El Señor respondió:
— Será Judá en cuyas manos he puesto el país.

3 Judá dijo a su hermano Simeónt:
— Ven conmigo al territorio que me ha tocado; atacaremos a los cananeos y después yo también iré contigo a tu territorio.
Y Simeón marchó con él.t 4 Subió Judá, y el Señor hizo que derrotara a los cananeos y a los fereceos matando en Bécect a diez mil hombres. 5 Encontraron en Bécec a Adoni Bécect, lo atacaron y derrotaron a los cananeos y a los fereceos. 6 Adoni Bécec escapó, pero lo persiguieron, lo capturaron y le cortaron los pulgarest de manos y pies.

7 Y Adoni Bécec dijo:
— Setenta reyes, con los pulgares de manos y pies cortados, recogían migajas bajo mi mesa. Dios me ha pagado según mi conducta.
Lo llevaron a Jerusalén y allí murió.
8 Los de la tribu de Judá atacaron a Jerusalén, la conquistaront, la pasaron a cuchillo y prendieron fuego a la ciudad. 9 Después, los de la tribu de Judá bajaron a atacar a los cananeos que ocupaban la Montaña, el Négueb y la Sefelat. 10 Se dirigió luego Judá contra los cananeos que habitaban en Hebrónt (que antes se llamaba Quiriat Arbá) y derrotó a Sesay, a Ajimán y a Talmay. 11 A continuación marchó contra los habitantes de Debir (que antes se llamaba Quiriat Séfer).t

12 Y Caleb dijo:
— Al que ataque a Quiriat Séfer y la conquiste, le daré por esposa a mi hija Axá.
13 La conquistó Otoniel, hijo de Quenaz, el hermano pequeño de Caleb. Y Caleb le dio por esposa a su hija Axá.t

14 Cuando iba a casa de su marido, Otoniel la instigó para que pidiera a su padre un campo. Se apeó Axá del asno y Caleb le preguntó:
— ¿Qué quieres?

15 Ella contestó:
— Hazme un regalo. Ya que me has dado tierras en el Négueb, dame también manantiales de agua.
Y Caleb le dio los manantiales de arriba y los de abajo.

16 Los hijos del quenita Jobab, suegro de Moisés, subieron con los de Judá desde la ciudad de las Palmeras* al desierto de Aradt, y fueron a establecerse entre los amalecitas.t

17 Judá y su hermano Simeón derrotaron a los cananeos que habitaban en Sefat* y consagraron la ciudad al exterminio*. Por eso la ciudad se llamó Jormát.
18 Judá no pudo apoderarset de Gaza y su comarca, ni de Ascalón y su comarca, ni de Ecrón y su comarca.

19 El Señor asistió a Judá, que conquistó la región montañosa; pero no pudo expulsar a los que habitaban la llanura porque tenían carros de hierro.t
20 A Caleb le fue asignada Hebrón, según las órdenes de Moisés; y él expulsó de allí a los tres hijos de Anac.t

21 Pero la tribu de Benjamín no consiguió expulsar a los jebuseos que habitaban en Jerusalén; por eso los jebuseos siguen habitando en Jerusalén con los benjaminitas hasta el día de hoy.
22 También los de la casa de Josét atacaron Betel; y el Señor los asistió. 23 Los de la casa de José hicieron un reconocimiento previo por los alrededores de Betel (que antes se llamaba Luz).

24 Los espías vieron a un hombre que salía de la ciudad y le dijeron:
— Indícanos por dónde se entra en la ciudad y tendremos compasión de ti.
25 Él les indicó la entrada de la ciudad. Los israelitas pasaron a cuchillo a sus habitantes, pero dejaron libre a aquel hombre con toda su familia.

26 El hombre marchó al país de los hititas* y edificó allí una ciudad a la que llamó Luzt. Es el nombre que tiene hasta la fecha.

Las tribus septentrionales

28 Pero cuando Israel cobró más fuerza, sometió a los cananeos a trabajos forzados, aunque no llegó a expulsarlos.
29 Tampoco Efraín pudo expulsar a los cananeos que habitaban en Guécer, con lo que los cananeos siguieron viviendo en Guécer, en medio de Efraín.t 30 Y lo mismo le sucedió a Zabulón: no pudo expulsar a los habitantes de Quitrón, ni a los de Nahalol; así que los cananeos se quedaron en medio de Zabulón, aunque sometidos a trabajos forzados. 31 Tampoco Aser pudo expulsar a los habitantes de Aco, ni a los de Sidón, ni a los de Majaleb, ni a los de Aczib, ni a los de Jelbá, ni a los de Afic, ni a los de Rejob;

32 por eso los de la tribu de Aser, al no poder expulsarlos, tuvieron que convivir con los cananeos que habitaban en la región.

33 Y tampoco Neftalí pudo expulsar a los habitantes de Bet Semes, ni a los de Bet Anat, y tuvo que convivir con los cananeos que ocupaban el país; pero los habitantes de Bet Semes y de Bet Anat fueron sometidos a trabajos forzados.
34 Los amorreos rechazaron hacia la montaña a los hijos de Dant y no les permitieron bajar a la llanura.

35 Los amorreos se mantuvieron en Jar Jéres, en Ayalón y en Salbín. Pero luego la tribu de José los sojuzgó y los sometió a trabajos forzados.
36 (El territorio de los edomitas se extendía desde la cuesta de Acrabín y de Selá hacia arriba).
