Matthew 15

1 Then there come to Jesus from Jerusalem Pharisees and scribes, saying,2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.3 And he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?4 For God said, Honor thy father and thy mother: and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die the death.5 But ye say, whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, That wherewith thou mightest have been profited by me is given to God;6 he shall not honor his father. And ye have made void the word of God because of your tradition.7 Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,

8 This people honoreth me with their lips; But their heart is far from me.

9 But in vain do they worship me, Teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men.

10 And he called to him the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:11 Not that which entereth into the mouth defileth the man; but that which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth the man.12 Then came the disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, when they heard this saying?13 But he answered and said, Every plant which my heavenly Father planted not, shall be rooted up.14 Let them alone: they are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both shall fall into a pit.15 And Peter answered and said unto him, Declare unto us the parable.16 And he said, Are ye also even yet without understanding?17 Perceive ye not, that whatsoever goeth into the mouth passeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?18 But the things which proceed out of the mouth come forth out of the heart; and they defile the man.19 For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, railings:20 these are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not the man.

21 And Jesus went out thence, and withdrew into the parts of Tyre and Sidon.22 And behold, a Canaanitish woman came out from those borders, and cried, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a demon.23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.24 But he answered and said, I was not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.25 But she came and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.26 And he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread and cast it to the dogs.27 But she said, Yea, Lord: for even the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it done unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was healed from that hour.

29 And Jesus departed thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and he went up into the mountain, and sat there.30 And there came unto him great multitudes, having with them the lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and they cast them down at this feet; and he healed them:31 insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb speaking, the maimed whole, and lame walking, and the blind seeing: and they glorified the God of Israel.

32 And Jesus called unto him his disciples, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days and have nothing to eat: and I would not send them away fasting, lest haply they faint on the way.33 And the disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so many loaves in a desert place as to fill so great a multitude?34 And Jesus said unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few small fishes.35 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground;36 and he took the seven loaves and the fishes; and he gave thanks and brake, and gave to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.37 And they all ate, and were filled: and they took up that which remained over of the broken pieces, seven baskets full.38 And they that did eat were four thousand men, besides women and children.39 And he sent away the multitudes, and entered into the boat, and came into the borders of Magadan.

MATEO 15

La cuestión de las tradiciones

(Mc 7,1-23)

1 Se acercaron a Jesús unos fariseos y maestros de la ley que procedían de Jerusalén, y le preguntaron:

2 — ¿Por qué tus discípulos violan la tradición de nuestros antepasados? ¿Por qué no se lavan las manost cuando van a comer?t

3 Jesús les respondió:
— ¿Y por qué ustedes violan lo que Dios ha mandado por seguir sus propias tradiciones? 4 Porque Dios ha dicho: Honra a tu padre y a tu madre; y también: El que maldiga a su padre o a su madre será condenado a muerte.t 5 En cambio, ustedes afirman: “Si alguno dice a su padre o a su madre: ‘Lo que tenía reservado para ayudarte lo he convertido en ofrenda para el Templo’t, 6 queda liberado de la obligación de prestarles ayudat”. De este modo, con la propia tradición de ustedes anulan lo que Dios había dispuesto.

7 ¡Hipócritas! Bien profetizó Isaías acerca de ustedes cuando dijo:

8  Este pueblo me honra de labios afuera,
pero su corazón está muy lejos de mí. t

9  Inútilmente me rinden culto,
pues enseñan doctrinas
que sólo son preceptos humanos.

10 Y recabando la atención de la gente, prosiguió:
— Oigan y entiendan esto:

11 lo que hace impurat a una persona no es lo que entra por la boca. Lo que verdaderamente la hace impura es lo que sale de la boca.t

12 Entonces los discípulos se acercaron a Jesús y le preguntaron:
— ¿Sabes que los fariseos se han sentido ofendidos al oírte?

13 Jesús les contestó:
— Toda planta que no haya plantado mi Padre celestial será arrancada de raíz.

14 Déjenlos, pues son ciegos que guían a otros ciegos. Y si un ciego guía a otro ciego, los dos caerán en el hoyo.t

15 Pedro pidió a Jesús:
— Explícanos qué significa lo que has dicho.t

16 Jesús contestó:
— ¿Tampoco ustedes son capaces de entenderlo? 17 ¿No comprenden que todo lo que entra por la boca pasa al vientre y va a parar a la letrina? 18 En cambio, lo que sale de la boca procede del corazón, y eso es lo que hace impura a la persona. 19 Porque del corazón proceden las malas intenciones, los asesinatos, los adulterios, las inmoralidades sexuales, los robos, las calumnias y las blasfemias.

20 Todo esto es lo que hace impura a una persona, y no el sentarse a comer sin haberse lavado las manos.

La mujer cananea

(Mc 7,24-30)

22 En esto, una mujer cananeat que vivía por aquellos lugares vino a su encuentro gritando:
— ¡Señor, Hijo de David, ten compasión de mí! Mi hija está poseída por un demonio que la atormenta terriblemente.t

23 Como Jesús no le contestaba ni una palabra, los discípulos se acercaron a él y le rogaron:
— Atiéndelat, porque no hace más que gritar detrás de nosotros.

24 Jesús entonces dijo:
— Dios me ha enviado solamente a las ovejas perdidas del pueblo de Israel.t

25 Pero la mujer, poniéndose de rodillas delante de Jesús, le suplicó:
— ¡Señor, ayúdame!

26 Él le contestó:
— No está bien quitarles el pan a los hijos para echárselo a los perrost.

27 Ella dijo:
— Es cierto, Señor; pero también los cachorrillos comen las migajas que caen de la mesa de sus amos.

28 Entonces Jesús le respondió:
— ¡Grande es tu fe, mujer! ¡Que se haga lo que deseas!
Y su hija quedó curada en aquel mismo instante.t

Jesús cura a numerosos enfermos

31 La gente estaba asombrada al ver que los mudos hablaban, los tullidos recobraban la salud, los cojos andaban y los ciegos veían. Y todos alabaron al Dios de Israel.t

Jesús da de comer a más de cuatro mil personas

(Mc 8,1-10)

32 Jesús llamó a sus discípulos y les dijo:
— Me da lástima esta gente.t Ya hace tres días que están conmigo y no tienen nada que comer. No quiero que se vayan en ayunas, no sea que desfallezcan por el camino.t

33 Los discípulos le dijeron:
— ¿No ves que estamos en un lugar apartado? ¿De dónde vamos a sacar suficiente pan para dar de comer a toda esta gente?

34 Jesús les preguntó:
— ¿Cuántos panes tienen?
Ellos contestaron:
— Siete y unos cuantos peces.
35 Jesús dispuso que la gente se sentara en el suelo. 36 Luego tomó los sietet panes y los peces, dio gracias a Dios, los partió y se los fue dando a los discípulos y estos se los fueron dando a la gente. 37 Todos comieron hasta quedar satisfechos; y aun así se llenaron siete espuertas con los trozos de pan que sobraron. 38 Los que comieron en aquella ocasión fueron cuatro mil, sin contar las mujeres ni los niños. 39 Luego Jesús despidió a la multitud, subió a la barca y se fue a la región de Magadánt.
