Matthew 17

1 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart:2 and he was transfigured before them; and his face did shine as the sun, and his garments became white as the light.3 And behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elijah talking with him.4 And Peter answered, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, I will make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.5 While he was yet speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold, a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.7 And Jesus came and touched them and said, Arise, and be not afraid.8 And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one, save Jesus only.

9 And as they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen from the dead.10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elijah must first come?11 And he answered and said, Elijah indeed cometh, and shall restore all things:12 but I say unto you, that Elijah is come already, and they knew him not, but did unto him whatsoever they would. Even so shall the Son of man also suffer of them.13 Then understood the disciples that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a man, kneeling to him, saying,15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is epileptic, and suffereth grievously; for oft-times he falleth into the fire, and off-times into the water.16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.17 And Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I bear with you? bring him hither to me.18 And Jesus rebuked him; and the demon went out of him: and the boy was cured from that hour.

19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast it out?20 And he saith unto them, Because of your little faith: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.21 But this kind goeth not out save by prayer and fasting.

22 And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be delivered up into the hands of men;23 and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised up. And they were exceeding sorry.

24 And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received the half-shekel came to Peter, and said, Doth not your teacher pay the half-shekel?25 He saith, Yea. And when he came into the house, Jesus spake first to him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? the kings of the earth, from whom do they receive toll or tribute? from their sons, or from strangers?26 And when he said, From strangers, Jesus said unto him, Therefore the sons are free.27 But, lest we cause them to stumble, go thou to the sea, and cast a hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a shekel: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

MATEO 17

Transfiguración del Señor

(Mc 9,2-13; Lc 9,28-36)

1 Seis días después, Jesús tomó aparte a Pedro y a los hermanos Santiago y Juan y los llevó a un monte alto. 2 Allí se transfiguró en presencia de ellos. Su rostro resplandeció como el sol y su ropa se volvió blanca como la luz.t 3 En esto, los discípulos vieron a Moisés y Elías conversando con él.t

4 Pedro dijo a Jesús:
— ¡Señor, qué bien estamos aquí! Si quieres, haré aquí tres cabañas: una para ti, otra para Moisés y otra para Elías.

5 Aún estaba hablando Pedro, cuando quedaron envueltos en una nube luminosat de donde procedía una voz que decía:
— Este es mi Hijo amado, en quien me complazco. Escúchenlo.t
6 Al oír esto, los discípulos se postraron rostro en tierra, sobrecogidos de miedo.

7 Pero Jesús, acercándose a ellos, los tocó y les dijo:
— Levántense, no tengan miedo.
8 Ellos alzaron los ojos, y ya no vieron a nadie más que a Jesús.

9 Mientras bajaban del monte, Jesús les ordenó:
— No cuenten esta visión a nadiet hasta que el Hijo del hombret haya resucitado.

10 Los discípulos le preguntaron:
— ¿Por qué dicen los maestros de la ley que Elías tiene que venir primerot?t

11 Jesús les contestó:
— Es cierto que Elías ha de venir y ha de ponerlo todo en orden.

12 Pero yo les aseguro que Elías ya vino, aunque ellos no lo reconocieron, sino que lo maltrataron a su antojo. Y el Hijo del hombre va a sufrir de la misma manera a manos de ellos.

13 Entonces los discípulos cayeron en la cuenta de que Jesús estaba refiriéndose a Juan el Bautistat.

Curación de un muchacho poseído por el demonio

(Mc 9,14-29; Lc 9,37-43a)

15 le dijo:
— Señor, ten compasión de mi hijo. Le dan ataques que le hacen sufrir lo indeciblet y muchas veces se arroja al fuego o al agua.

16 Lo he traído a tus discípulos, pero no han podido sanarlo.

17 Jesús exclamó:
— ¡Gente incrédula y perversa! ¿Hasta cuándo habré de estar entre ustedes? ¿Hasta cuándo tendré que soportarlos? Tráiganme aquí al muchacho.t

18 En seguida dio una orden, salió del muchacho el demonio y en aquel mismo instante quedó curado.

19 Más tarde se acercaron a Jesús los discípulos y le preguntaron aparte:
— ¿Por qué nosotros no pudimos expulsar ese demonio?

20 Jesús les contestó:
— Porque ustedes no tuvieron fe. Les aseguro que si tuvieran fe, aunque sólo fuera como un grano de mostazat, le dirían a este monte: “¡Quítate de ahí y ponte allí!”, y el monte cambiaría de lugar. Nada les resultaría imposible.t

21 [Pero este género de demonios sólo sale por medio de la oración y el ayuno]t.

Jesús anuncia por segunda vez su muerte y su resurrección

(Mc 9,30-32; Lc 9,43b-45)

22 Estando todos reunidos en Galilea, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos:
— El Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado a hombrest

23 que lo matarán, pero al tercer día resucitará.
Al oír esto, los discípulos se entristecieron mucho.

El impuesto del Templo

24 Cuando llegaron a Cafarnaún, se dirigieron a Pedro los encargados de recaudar los impuestos del Templo y le preguntaron:
— ¿No paga el Maestro de ustedes el impuesto del Templot?t

25 Pedro les contestó:
— Sin duda que sí.
Más tarde, al llegar Pedro a casat, Jesús lo abordó, diciéndole:
— Simón, ¿qué te parece? Los reyes de este mundo, ¿de quiénes perciben impuestos y tributos? ¿De sus propios súbditos o de los extranjeros?

26 Pedro contestó:
— De los extranjeros.
Y Jesús añadió:
— Por tanto, los súbditos están exentos. 27 Pero, en fin, para que nadie se ofenda*, acércate al lago* y echa el anzuelo al agua. En la boca del primer pez que pesques encontrarás la moneda precisat. Págales con ella el impuesto por ti y por mí.
