Matthew 20

1 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that was a householder, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers into his vineyard.2 And when he had agreed with the laborers for a shilling a day, he sent them into his vineyard.3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing in the marketplace idle;4 and to them he said, Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.5 Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise.6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing; and he saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard.8 And when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the laborers, and pay them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a shilling.10 And when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise received every man a shilling.11 And when they received it, they murmured against the householder,12 saying, These last have spent but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.13 But he answered and said to one of them, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a shilling?14 Take up that which is thine, and go thy way; it is my will to give unto this last, even as unto thee.15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? or is thine eye evil, because I am good?16 So the last shall be first, and the first last.

17 And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples apart, and on the way he said unto them,18 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests and scribes; and they shall condemn him to death,19 and shall deliver him unto the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify: and the third day he shall be raised up.

20 Then came to him the mother of the sons of Zebedee with her sons, worshipping him, and asking a certain thing of him.21 And he said unto her, What wouldest thou? She saith unto him, Command that these my two sons may sit, one on thy right hand, and one on thy left hand, in thy kingdom.22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink the cup that I am about to drink? They say unto him, We are able.23 He saith unto them, My cup indeed ye shall drink: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left hand, is not mine to give; but it is for them for whom it hath been prepared of my Father.24 And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation concerning the two brethren.25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.26 Not so shall it be among you: but whosoever would become great among you shall be your minister;27 and whosoever would be first among you shall be your servant:28 even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

29 And as they went out from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.30 And behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, Lord, have mercy on us, thou son of David.31 And the multitude rebuked them, that they should hold their peace: but they cried out the more, saying, Lord, have mercy on us, thou son of David.32 And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I should do unto you?33 They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.34 And Jesus, being moved with compassion, touched their eyes; and straightway they received their sight, and followed him.

Parábola de los jornaleros contratados

1 El reino de los cielost puede compararse al amo de una finca que salió una mañana temprano a contratar jornaleros para su viña.t 2 Convino con los jornaleros en pagarles el salario correspondiente a una jornada de trabajot, y los envió a la viña.t 3 Hacia las nueve de la mañana salió de nuevo y vio a otros jornaleros que estaban en la plaza sin hacer nada. 4 Les dijo: “Vayan también ustedes a la viña. Les pagaré lo que sea justo”. 5 Y ellos fueron. Volvió a salir hacia el mediodía, y otra vez a las tres de la tarde, e hizo lo mismo. 6 Finalmente, sobre las cinco de la tardet, volvió a la plaza y encontró otro grupo de desocupados. Les preguntó: “¿Por qué están aquí todo el día sin hacer nada?”.

7 Le contestaron: “Porque nadie nos ha contratado”. Él les dijo: “Pues vayan también ustedes a la viña”.
8 Al anochecer, el amo de la viña ordenó a su capataz: “Llama a los jornaleros y págales su salario, empezando por los últimos hasta los primeros”.t 9 Se presentaron, pues, los que habían comenzado a trabajar sobre las cinco de la tarde y cada uno recibió el salario correspondiente a una jornada completa. 10 Entonces los que habían estado trabajando desde la mañana pensaron que recibirían más; pero, cuando llegó su turno, recibieron el mismo salario. 11 Así que, al recibirlo, se pusieron a murmurar contra el amo 12 diciendo: “A estos que sólo han trabajado una hora, les pagas lo mismo que a nosotros, que hemos trabajado toda la jornada soportando el calor del día”. 13 Pero el amo contestó a uno de ellos: “Amigo, no te trato injustamente. ¿No convinimos en que trabajarías por esa cantidad? 14 Pues tómala y vete. Si yo quiero pagar a este que llegó a última hora lo mismo que a ti,

15 ¿no puedo hacer con lo mío lo que quiera? ¿O es que mi generosidad va a provocar tu envidiat?”.t

16 Así, los que ahora son últimos serán los primeros, y los que ahora son primeros serán los últimos.t

Jesús anuncia por tercera vez su muerte y su resurrección

(Mc 10,32-34; Lc 18,31-34)

17 Cuando Jesús iba de camino subiendo hacia Jerusalén, llamó aparte a los doce discípulos y les dijo:
18 — Ya ven que estamos subiendo a Jerusalén. Allí el Hijo del hombret será entregado a los jefes de los sacerdotes y a los maestros de la ley que lo condenarán a muerte;t

19 luego lo pondrán en manos de extranjeros para que se burlen de él, lo golpeen y lo crucifiquen. Pero al tercer día resucitará.

Petición de los hijos de Zebedeo

(Mc 10,35-45)

21 Jesús le preguntó:
— ¿Qué es lo que deseas?
Ella dijo:
— Ordena que estos dos hijos míos se sienten en tu reino, el uno a tu derecha y el otro a tu izquierda.t

22 Jesús respondió:
— No saben lo que están pidiendo. ¿Pueden beber ustedes la misma copa de amargura que yo estoy a punto de beber?
Ellos le contestaron:
— ¡Sí, podemos beberla!t

23 Jesús les dijo:
— Pues bien, beberán mi copa de amargura; pero el que se sienten el uno a mi derecha y el otro a mi izquierda, no es cosa mía concederlo; eso es para quienes mi Padre lo ha reservado.t
24 Cuando los otros diez discípulos oyeron esto, se sintieron muy molestos con los dos hermanos.

25 Pero Jesús los reunió y les dijo:
— Como muy bien saben ustedes, los que gobiernan las naciones las someten a su dominio, y los poderosos las rigen despóticamente. 26 Pero entre ustedes no debe ser así. Antes bien, si alguno quiere ser grande, que se ponga al servicio de los demás;t 27 y si alguno quiere ser principal, que se haga servidor de todos.

28 De la misma manera que el Hijo del hombre no ha venido para ser servido, sino para servir y dar su vida en pago de la libertadt de todos*.t

Curación de dos ciegos

(Mc 10,46-52, Lc 18,35-43)

30 En esto, dos ciegos* que estaban sentados junto al camino, al oír que Jesús pasaba por allí, se pusieron a gritar:
— ¡Señor, Hijo de Davidt, ten compasión de nosotros!t

31 La gente les decía que se callaran, pero ellos gritaban cada vez más:
— ¡Señor, Hijo de David, ten compasión de nosotros!

32 Entonces Jesús se detuvo, los llamó y les preguntó:
— ¿Qué quieren que haga por ustedes?

33 Los ciegos le contestaron:
— Señor, que podamos ver.
34 Jesús, conmovido, les tocó los ojos, y al punto los ciegos recobraron la vista y se fueron tras él.t
