Matthew 26

1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these words, he said unto his disciples,2 Ye know that after two days the passover cometh, and the Son of man is delivered up to be crucified.3 Then were gathered together the chief priests, and the elders of the people, unto the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas;4 and they took counsel together that they might take Jesus by subtlety, and kill him.5 But they said, Not during the feast, lest a tumult arise among the people.

6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,7 there came unto him a woman having an alabaster cruse of exceeding precious ointment, and she poured it upon his head, as he sat at meat.8 But when the disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?9 For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.10 But Jesus perceiving it said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.12 For in that she poured this ointment upon my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, that also which this woman hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

14 Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,15 and said, What are ye willing to give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they weighed unto him thirty pieces of silver.16 And from that time he sought opportunity to deliver him unto them.

17 Now on the first day of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Where wilt thou that we make ready for thee to eat the passover?18 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Teacher saith, My time is at hand; I keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.19 And the disciples did as Jesus appointed them; and they made ready the passover.

20 Now when even was come, he was sitting at meat with the twelve disciples;21 and as they were eating, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began to say unto him every one, Is it I, Lord?23 And he answered and said, He that dipped his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.24 The Son of man goeth, even as it is written of him: but woe unto that man through whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had not been born.25 And Judas, who betrayed him, answered and said, Is it I, Rabbi? He saith unto him, Thou hast said.

26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it; and he gave to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.27 And he took a cup, and gave thanks, and gave to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many unto remission of sins.29 But I say unto you, I shall not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.

30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out unto the mount of Olives.

31 Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended in me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.32 But after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee.33 But Peter answered and said unto him, If all shall be offended in thee, I will never be offended.34 Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, that this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.35 Peter saith unto him, Even if I must die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.

36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto his disciples, Sit ye here, while I go yonder and pray.37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and sore troubled.38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: abide ye here, and watch with me.39 And he went forward a little, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass away from me: nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.42 Again a second time he went away, and prayed, saying, My Father, if this cannot pass away, except I drink it, thy will be done.43 And he came again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.44 And he left them again, and went away, and prayed a third time, saying again the same words.45 Then cometh he to the disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.46 Arise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that betrayeth me.

47 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priest and elders of the people.48 Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he: take him.49 And straightway he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, Rabbi; and kissed him.50 And Jesus said unto him, Friend, do that for which thou art come. Then they came and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.51 And behold, one of them that were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and smote the servant of the high priest, and struck off his ear.52 Then saith Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into its place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.53 Or thinkest thou that I cannot beseech my Father, and he shall even now send me more than twelve legions of angels?54 How then should the scriptures be fulfilled that thus it must be?55 In that hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a robber with swords and staves to seize me? I sat daily in the temple teaching, and ye took me not.56 But all this is come to pass, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left him, and fled.

57 And they that had taken Jesus led him away to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together.58 But Peter followed him afar off, unto the court of the high priest, and entered in, and sat with the officers, to see the end.59 Now the chief priests and the whole council sought false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death;60 and they found it not, though many false witnesses came. But afterward came two,61 and said, This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.62 And the high priest stood up, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou art the Christ, the Son of God.64 Jesus said unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Henceforth ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.65 Then the high priest rent his garments, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy: what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard the blasphemy:66 what think ye? They answered and said, He is worthy of death.67 Then did they spit in his face and buffet him: and some smote him with the palms of their hands,68 saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ: who is he that struck thee?

69 Now Peter was sitting without in the court: and a maid came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus the Galilaean.70 But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.71 And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and saith unto them that were there, This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth.72 And again he denied with an oath, I know not the man.73 And after a little while they that stood by came and said to Peter, Of a truth thou also art one of them; for thy speech maketh thee known.74 Then began he to curse and to swear, I know not the man. And straightway the cock crew.75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

La Pascua de Jesús (26—28)

Complot contra Jesús

(Mc 14,1-2; Lc 22,1-2; Jn 11,43-45)

1 Cuando Jesús terminó todos estos discursost, dijo a sus discípulos:

2 — Como saben, dentro de dos días es la Pascua, y el Hijo del hombret va a ser entregado para que lo crucifiquen.t
3 Por entonces se reunieron los jefes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo en casa de Caifást, el sumo sacerdote. 4 Allí tomaron el acuerdo de tender una trampa a Jesús para prenderlo y darle muerte.

5 Dijeron, sin embargo:
— No lo hagamos durante la fiesta, a fin de evitar que se altere el orden público.

Unción de Jesús en Betania

(Mc 14,3-9; Jn 12,1-8)

8 Esta acción molestó a los discípulos, que dijeron:
— ¿A qué viene tal derroche?

9 Este perfume podía haberse vendido por muy buen precio y haber dado el importe a los pobres.

10 Pero Jesús, advirtiendo lo que pasaba, les dijo:
— ¿Por qué molestan a esta mujer? Lo que ha hecho conmigo es bueno. 11 A los pobres los tendrán siempre entre ustedes, pero a mí no me tendrán siempre.t 12 Al verter este perfume sobre mí, es como si preparara mi cuerpo para el entierrot.

13 Les aseguro que en cualquier lugar del mundo donde se anuncie la buena noticiat, se recordará también a esta mujer y lo que hizo.

Judas traiciona a Jesús

(Mc 14,10-11; Lc 22,3-6)

15 y les propuso:
— ¿Qué recompensa me darán si les entrego a Jesús?
Le ofrecieron treinta monedas de plata.

16 Desde aquel momento, Judas comenzó a buscar una oportunidad para entregarles a Jesús.

Los discípulos preparan la cena de Pascua

(Mc 14,12-16; Lc 22,7-13)

17 El primer día de los Panes sin levadurat se acercaron los discípulos a Jesús y le preguntaron:
— ¿Dónde quieres que te preparemos la cena de Pascua?t

18 Jesús les contestó:
— Vayan a la ciudad, a casa de fulano, y denle este recado: “El Maestro dice: Mi hora está cerca y voy a celebrar la Pascua en tu casa con mis discípulos”.t

19 Los discípulos hicieron lo que Jesús les había encargado y prepararon la cena de Pascua.

Jesús anuncia la traición de Judas

(Mc 14,17-21; Lc 22,14.21.23; Jn 13,21-30)

21 y mientras cenaban, dijo:
— Les aseguro que uno de ustedes va a traicionarme.

22 Los discípulos, muy tristes, comenzaron a preguntarle uno tras otro:
— ¿Acaso seré yo, Señor?

23 Jesús les contestó:
— El que va a traicionarme es uno que come en mi propio plato.t

24 Es cierto que el Hijo del hombre tiene que seguir su camino, como dicen de él las Escrituras. Sin embargo, ¡ay de aquel que traiciona al Hijo del hombre! Mejor le sería no haber nacido.t

25 Judas, el traidor, le preguntó:
— ¿Acaso soy yo, Maestro?
Jesús le contestó:
— Tú lo has dicho.

La cena del Señor

(Mc 14,22-25; Lc 22,14-23; 1 Co 11,23-25)

26 Durante la cena, Jesús tomó pan, bendijo a Dios, lo partió y se lo dio a sus discípulos, diciendo:
— Tomen, coman: esto es mi cuerpo.t

27 Tomó luego en sus manos una copat, dio gracias a Dios y la pasó a sus discípulos, diciendo:
— Beban todos de ella, 28 porque esto es mi sangre, con la que Dios confirma la alianzat, y que va a ser derramada en favor de todos para perdón de los pecados.t

29 Les digo que no volveré a beber de este fruto de la vid hasta el día aquel en que beba con ustedes un vino nuevo en el reino de mi Padre.

30 Cantaron después el himno* y salieron hacia el monte de los Olivost.

Jesús predice la negación de Pedro

(Mc 14,27-31; Lc 22,31-34; Jn 13,36-38)

31 Jesús les dijo entonces:
— Esta noche todos ustedes me abandonarán, porque así lo dicen las Escrituras: Heriré al pastor y se dispersarán las ovejas del rebaño.t

32 Pero después de mi resurrección iré antes que ustedes a Galilea.t

33 Pedro le contestó:
— ¡Aunque todos te abandonen, yo no te abandonarét!

34 Jesús insistió:
— Te aseguro que esta misma noche, antes de que cante el gallot, tú me habrás negado tres veces.t

35 Pedro insistió:
— ¡Yo no te negaré, aunque tenga que morir contigo!
Y lo mismo decían los otros discípulos.t

Jesús ora en Getsemaní

(Mc 14,32-42; Lc 22,39-46)

36 Llegó Jesús, acompañado de sus discípulos, al lugar llamado Getsemanít, y les dijo:
— Quédense aquí sentados mientras yo voy un poco más allá a orar.t
37 Se llevó consigo a Pedro y a los dos hijos de Zebedeo y comenzó a sentirse afligido y angustiado;t

38 entonces les dijo:
— Me está invadiendo una tristeza de muerte. Quédense aquí y velen conmigo.t

39 Se adelantó unos pasos más y, postrándose rostro en tierra, oró así:
— Padre mío, si es posible, aparta de mí esta copa de amargura; pero no se haga lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quieres tú.

40 Volvió entonces a donde estaban los discípulos y, al encontrarlos dormidos, dijo a Pedro:
— ¿Ni siquiera han podido velar una hora conmigo?

41 Velen y oren para que no desfallezcan en la prueba. Es cierto que tienen buena voluntad, pero les faltan las fuerzas.t

42 Por segunda vez se alejó de ellos y oró así:t
— Padre mío, si no es posible que esta copa de amargura pase sin que yo la beba, hágase lo que tú quieras.
43 Regresó de nuevo a donde estaban los discípulos, y volvió a encontrarlos dormidos pues tenían los ojos cargados de sueño. 44 Así que los dejó como estaban y, apartándose de ellos, oró por tercera vez con las mismas palabras.

45 Cuando volvió, les dijo:
— ¿Aún siguen durmiendo y descansando? Fíjense que ha llegado la hora y el Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de pecadores.t

46 ¡Levántense, vámonos! Ya está aquí el que me va a entregar.

Jesús es arrestado

(Mc 14,43-50; Lc 22,47-53; Jn 18,3-12)

48 Judas, el traidor, les había dado esta contraseña:
— Aquel a quien yo bese, ese es; aprésenlo.

49 Así que apenas llegó, se acercó a Jesús y lo saludó diciendo:
— ¡Hola, Maestro!
Y lo besó.

50 Jesús le dijo:
— Amigo, lo que has venido a hacer, hazlo ya.
Entonces se abalanzaron sobre Jesús y, echándole mano, lo apresaron. 51 De pronto, uno de los que estaban con Jesús sacó la espada y, de un golpe, le cortó una oreja al criado del sumo sacerdote.t

52 Pero Jesús le dijo:
— Guarda tu espada en su vaina, pues todos los que empuñan espada, a espada morirán.t 53 ¿Acaso piensas que no puedo pedir ayuda a mi Padre, y que él me enviaría ahora mismo más de doce legionest de ángeles?

54 Pero en ese caso, ¿cómo se cumplirían las Escrituras según las cuales las cosas tienen que suceder así?t

55 Entonces dijo Jesús a aquel tropel de gente:
— ¿Por qué han venido a arrestarme con espadas y garrotes, como si yo fuera un ladrón? Todos los días me sentaba en el Templo para enseñar, y no me han arrestado.

56 Pero todo esto sucede para que se cumpla lo que escribieron los profetas.
Y en aquel momento, todos los discípulos de Jesús lo abandonaron y huyeron.t

Jesús ante el Consejo Supremo

(Mc 14,53-65; Lc 22,54-55.63-71; Jn 18,12-14.19-24)

61 que dijeron:
— Este ha afirmado: “Yo puedo derribar el Templo de Dios y reconstruirlo en tres días”.t

62 Levantándose entonces el sumo sacerdote, dijo a Jesús:
— ¿No tienes nada que alegar a lo que estos testifican contra ti?

63 Pero Jesús permaneció en silencio. Entonces el sumo sacerdote le conminó:
— ¡En nombre del Dios vivo, te exijo que nos digas si tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios!t

64 Jesús le respondió:
— Tú lo has dicho*. Y añadiré que más adelante verán al Hijo del hombre sentado junto al Todopoderosot y viniendo sobre las nubes del cielo.t

65 Al oír esto, el sumo sacerdote se rasgó las vestidurast y exclamó:
— ¡Ha blasfemado! ¿Para qué necesitamos más testimonios? ¡Ya han oído su blasfemia!t

66 ¿Qué les parece?
Ellos contestaron:
— ¡Que merece la muerte!
67 Y se pusieron a escupirlo en la cara y a darle puñetazos mientras otros lo abofeteaban

68 diciendo:
— ¡Adivina, Mesías, quién te ha pegado!t

Pedro niega a Jesús

(Mc 14,66-72; Lc 22,56-62; Jn 18,15-18.25-27)

69 Entre tanto, Pedro estaba sentado fuera, en el patio. Se le acercó una criada, y le dijo:
— Tú eres uno de los que acompañaban a Jesús, el galileo.

70 Pedro lo negó delante de todos, diciendo:
— ¡No sé de qué hablas!

71 Luego se dirigió hacia la puerta y, cuando salía, lo vio otra criada, que aseguró a los que estaban allí:
— Este también andaba con Jesús de Nazaret.t

72 Otra vez lo negó Pedro, jurando:
— ¡No sé quién es ese hombre!

73 Algo más tarde se acercaron a Pedro unos que estaban allí, y le dijeron:
— Pues no cabe duda de que tú eres de los suyos; el acento mismo te delata.

74 Entonces él comenzó a jurar y perjurar:
— ¡No sé quién es ese hombre!
Y al instante cantó un gallo.t 75 Pedro se acordó de que Jesús le había dicho: “Antes de que cante el gallo me habrás negado tres veces”. Y saliendo de allí, se echó a llorar amargamente.
