Gideon: The Rest of the Story
Gideon is known for putting out a fleece to test God. He is known for leading the Israelites against the Midianites. Unfortunately his story didn't end there.
Gideon took the spoils of war and made a gold statue, which the Israelites started worshiping. The Bible says that even Gideon and his family were trapped into worshiping the statue.
Before we get too critical of Gideon let's ask ourselves how often do we take the "wins" that God gives us and turn them into an idols. We don't make statues but instead we memorialize past victories and often worship them instead of God.
Many churches idolize the past. Remember when God helped us get into this building? Hymns become idols which are worshiped instead of the God the songs are about. Pews become sacred altars which must not be removed.
God gives us the victory. He is the one to be worshiped!
