I find it humorous that some people believe speaking in tongues is a garbled mess of noises and sounds.

This passage IMHO is the Bible's way of describing for us what tongues are all about. NOT nonsense that makes no sense to anyone - but different languages that can be understood correctly by people not speaking that language. Or similarly, speaking another language (without knowing how) so a person of that language can hear the Truth.
