The Cage of Failure

Acts 28:1-6 NIV

Ashore on Malta

1 Once safely on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta. 2 The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold. 3 Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. 4 When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, “This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live.” 5 But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects. 6 The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead, but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.

Shipwrecks and Snakes

Paul could have developed a victim mentality; but instead, he saw these events as Divine opportunities. It took a shipwreck and a snakebite to strategically place Paul in a place where he could minister to the people of Malta.

Divine Detours

We are not immune to shipwrecks and snakebites, God just uses them to accomplish His purposes. Sometimes, the most spiritual thing we can do is just hang on. God is far more concerned with who we are becoming in the process of the journey, than where we end up on the journey. God is going to get you where He wants you to go; but He is not going to get you there until you are ready to get there. We are not in control, and our missteps and failures cannot frustrate the providential plan of God.

but the Lord determines his steps.

Wild Winds

Paul arrived in Malta because of something totally out of his control...the wind. God has the ability to turn our failures into someone else's miracle

John 3:8

John 3:8 NIV

8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
