2 Chronicles 7
1 Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt-offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of Jehovah filled the house.2 And the priests could not enter into the house of Jehovah, because the glory of Jehovah filled Jehovah’s house.3 And all the children of Israel looked on, when the fire came down, and the glory of Jehovah was upon the house; and they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and gave thanks unto Jehovah, saying, For he is good; for his lovingkindness endureth for ever.4 Then the king and all the people offered sacrifice before Jehovah.5 And king Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty and two thousand oxen, and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the people dedicated the house of God.6 And the priests stood, according to their offices; the Levites also with instruments of music of Jehovah, which David the king had made to give thanks unto Jehovah, (for his lovingkindness endureth for ever,) when David praised by their ministry: and the priests sounded trumpets before them; and all Israel stood.7 Moreover Solomon hallowed the middle of the court that was before the house of Jehovah; for there he offered the burnt-offerings, and the fat of the peace-offerings, because the brazen altar which Solomon had made was not able to receive the burnt-offering, and the meal-offering, and the fat.8 So Solomon held the feast at that time seven days, and all Israel with him, a very great assembly, from the entrance of Hamath unto the brook of Egypt.9 And on the eighth day they held a solemn assembly: for they kept the dedication of the altar seven days, and the feast seven days.10 And on the three and twentieth day of the seventh month he sent the people away unto their tents, joyful and glad of heart for the goodness that Jehovah had showed unto David, and to Solomon, and to Israel his people.11 Thus Solomon finished the house of Jehovah, and the king’s house: and all that came into Solomon’s heart to make in the house of Jehovah, and in his own house, he prosperously effected.12 And Jehovah appeared to Solomon by night, and said unto him, I have heard thy prayer, and have chosen this place to myself for a house of sacrifice.13 If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people;14 if my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.15 Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent, unto the prayer that is made in this place.16 For now have I chosen and hallowed this house, that my name may be there for ever; and mine eyes and my heart shall be there perpetually.17 And as for thee, if thou wilt walk before me as David thy father walked, and do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and mine ordinances;18 then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom, according as I covenanted with David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man to be ruler in Israel.19 But if ye turn away, and forsake my statutes and my commandments which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them;20 then will I pluck them up by the roots out of my land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight, and I will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples.21 And this house, which is so high, every one that passeth by it shall be astonished, and shall say, Why hath Jehovah done thus unto this land, and to this house?22 And they shall answer, Because they forsook Jehovah, the God of their fathers, who brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods, and worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath he brought all this evil upon them.

Les sacrifices offerts au Seigneur

1 Lorsque Salomon eut terminé cette prière, un feu descendit du ciel et brûla les sacrifices complets et les sacrifices de communion, et la glorieuse présence du Seigneur remplit le templet. 2 Les prêtres ne purent pas pénétrer dans le sanctuaire, car cette présence glorieuse le remplissait.
3 Tous les Israélites présents virent le feu descendre du ciel et la gloire du Seigneur rayonner dans le temple ; aussitôt ils se jetèrent à genoux sur le dallage, le visage contre terre, pour adorer et louer le Seigneur à cause de sa bonté et de son amour sans fin.
4 Le roi et tout le peuple offrirent ces sacrifices en l’honneur du Seigneur. 5 Ils offrirent vingt-deux mille bœufs et cent vingt mille moutons et chèvres, pour inaugurer le temple de Dieu. 6 Les prêtres étaient à leurs postes. Les lévites jouaient des instruments de musique sacrés que le roi David avait fait fabriquer ; ils louaient le Seigneur pour son amour sans fin, selon le cantique que David leur avait transmis. En face d’eux, des prêtres sonnaient de la trompette. Tout le peuple était debout.
7 Alors Salomon consacra tout le centre de la cour qui s’étend devant le temple du Seigneur ; en effet l’autel de bronze que Salomon avait dressé ne pouvait recevoir tous les sacrifices, et le roi dut utiliser la cour pour faire brûler les sacrifices complets, les offrandes végétales et les parties grasses des sacrifices de communion.
8 A cette même occasion, Salomon célébra pendant sept jours la fête des Huttes en compagnie des Israélites assemblés en très grand nombre : ils étaient venus de tout le pays, depuis Lebo-Hamath au nord jusqu’au torrent d’Égypte au sudt. 9 Une assemblée solennelle eut lieu au huitième jour de la fête. Ainsi on célébra la consécration de l’autel pendant sept jours, puis la fête elle-même dura sept autres jours.
10 Après quoi, le vingt-troisième jour du septième mois, le roi renvoya les Israélites chez eux. Ils s’en allèrent tout joyeux et le cœur content parce que le Seigneur s’était montré plein de bienveillance envers David, envers Salomon et envers Israël, son peuple.Seconde apparition du Seigneur à Salomon

11 Lorsque le roi Salomon eut fini le temple du Seigneur et son propre palais, lorsqu’il eut mené à bien tout ce qu’il avait eu l’intention de faire dans ces deux bâtiments, 12 le Seigneur lui apparut pendant la nuit et lui dit : « J’ai entendu ta prière ; j’ai accepté de choisir ce lieu pour qu’on m’y offre des sacrifices. 13 Supposons qu’un jour je ferme le ciel et qu’il n’y ait plus de pluie, ou que j’ordonne aux sauterelles de ravager le pays, ou encore que j’envoie une épidémie de peste sur mon peuple : 14 si alors mon peuple, le peuple à qui j’ai donné mon nom, s’humilie et prie, si les Israélites me recherchent en renonçant à leur mauvaise conduite, moi, dans le ciel, je serai attentif, je pardonnerai leur péché et je rétablirai la prospérité de leur pays. 15 Dès maintenant, j’ouvre mes yeux ; je serai attentif à toute prière qu’on m’adressera dans ce temple. 16 Je l’ai choisi, je l’ai consacré en acceptant d’y manifester pour toujours ma présence parmi vous ; je veillerai sur lui, toujours plein de bonté envers vous. 17 Quant à toi, si tu te conduis envers moi comme ton père David, si tu fais tout ce que je t’ordonne, si tu obéis aux lois et aux règles que je t’ai données, 18 sache que j’affermirai ton autorité de roi, conformément à l’alliance que j’ai conclue avec ton père David en lui disant qu’il y aurait toujours l’un de ses descendants qui, après lui, gouvernerait le peuple d’Israëlt. 19 Mais si vous vous détournez de moi, si vous négligez d’obéir aux lois et aux commandements que je vous ai donnés, si vous servez d’autres dieux et si vous vous inclinez devant eux pour les adorer, 20 je vous arracherai de la terre que je vous ai donnée, et je rejetterai loin de moi le temple que j’ai consacré en mon honneur. Alors tous les peuples ricaneront au sujet d’Israël et se moqueront de lui. 21 Quand les gens passeront près de ce temple auparavant si grandioset, ils seront stupéfaits et demanderont : “Pourquoi le Seigneur a-t-il traité ce pays et ce temple d’une telle manière ?”, 22 et on leur répondra : “C’est parce que les Israélites ont abandonné le Seigneur, le Dieu de leurs ancêtres, qui les avait fait sortir d’Égypte ; le Seigneur leur a infligé tous ces malheurs parce qu’ils ont adoré d’autres dieux.” »
