1 And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.2 And David said, I will show kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness unto me. So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.3 But the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father, in that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David sent his servants unto thee to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?4 So Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.5 When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they were become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with a thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men.7 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.8 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate: and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob, and the men of Tob and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.
9 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:10 And the rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon.11 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me; but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.12 Be of good courage, and let us play the man for our people, and for the cities of our God: and Jehovah do that which seemeth him good.13 So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.14 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
15 And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they gathered themselves together.16 And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the River: and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer at their head.17 And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians the men of seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, so that he died there.19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

Les ministres de David déshonorés

1 Quelque temps après, le roi des Ammonites mourut et son fils Hanoun lui succéda. 2 David se dit : « Je veux traiter Hanoun, fils de Nahach, avec bonté, tout comme son père l’a fait à mon égard. » Il envoya donc quelques-uns de ses ministres présenter ses condoléances à Hanoun, à l’occasion de la mort de son père. Lorsque les ministres de David arrivèrent dans le pays des Ammonites, 3 les princes ammonites dirent à leur maître Hanoun : « T’imagines-tu que c’est seulement pour honorer la mémoire de ton père que David envoie des ministres t’apporter ses condoléances ? N’est-ce pas plutôt pour qu’ils jouent les espions en parcourant la villet, afin de pouvoir un jour s’en emparer ? » 4 Alors Hanoun fit arrêter les ministres de David : on leur rasa la moitié de la barbe, on leur coupa les vêtements à mi-hauteur, au niveau des fesses, et on les renvoya.
5 David en fut informé. Il envoya des messagers à la rencontre de ses ministres, qui étaient écrasés de honte. Le roi leur faisait dire : « Restez à Jéricho jusqu’à ce que vos barbes aient repoussé. Alors seulement vous reviendrez ici. »Guerre contre les Ammonites et les Syriens

6 Les Ammonites comprirent qu’ils s’étaient rendus odieux à David. Ils prirent donc à leur solde vingt mille soldats des États syriens de Beth-Rehob et de Soba, mille hommes de l’armée du roi de Maaka et douze mille de Tobt. 7 Dès que David l’apprit, il dépêcha sur les lieux le général Joab avec toute l’armée de métier. 8 Les Ammonites allèrent se ranger en ordre de bataille près de la porte de leur capitale. Les Syriens de Soba et de Beth-Rehob, ainsi que les soldats de Tob et de Maaka, occupaient une autre position dans la campagne. 9 Joab constata qu’il devait faire face à deux fronts, l’un devant lui et l’autre derrière. Il choisit les meilleurs soldats d’Israël et les plaça en face des Syriens. 10 Il confia le reste de l’armée à son frère Abichaï et le plaça en face des Ammonites. 11 Il dit à son frère : « Si les Syriens sont plus forts que moi, tu viendras à mon secours. Si au contraire les Ammonites sont plus forts que toi, c’est moi qui viendrai à ton secours. 12 Montre-toi courageux, combattons avec vaillance pour notre peuple et les villes de notre Dieu. Et que le Seigneur agisse comme il le jugera bon. » 13 Joab et sa troupe s’avancèrent pour combattre les Syriens ; ceux-ci s’enfuirent devant lui.
14 Quand les Ammonites virent les Syriens en fuite, ils s’enfuirent eux-mêmes devant Abichaï et rentrèrent dans leur ville. Alors Joab mit fin à la campagne contre les Ammonites et regagna Jérusalem.
15 Les Syriens, constatant qu’ils avaient été battus par les Israélites, rassemblèrent toutes leurs troupes. 16 Hadadézer envoya des messagers mobiliser les Syriens habitant au-delà de l’Euphrate. Ceux-ci arrivèrent à Hélamt ; à leur tête se trouvait Chobak, commandant en chef de l’armée de Hadadézer. 17 David en fut informé ; il rassembla toute l’armée israélite, passa le Jourdain et se rendit à Hélam. Les Syriens se placèrent en ordre de bataille, face à David. Ils attaquèrent, 18 mais ils furent mis en fuite par les Israélites. David et ses troupes tuèrent sept cents attelages de chevaux et quarante mille cavaliers ; ils blessèrent le général Chobak lui-même, qui mourut là. 19 Lorsque tous les rois soumis à Hadadézer virent qu’ils avaient été battus par les Israélites, ils firent la paix avec eux et se soumirent à eux. Et les Syriens n’osèrent plus porter secours aux Ammonites.
