2 Samuel 2
1 And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And Jehovah said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.2 So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.3 And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, The men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul.5 And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of Jehovah, that ye have showed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.6 And now Jehovah show lovingkindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.7 Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be ye valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.
8 Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s host, had taken Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;9 and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.10 Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
12 And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.14 And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men, I pray thee, arise and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.15 Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.16 And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.17 And the battle was very sore that day: and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
18 And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.19 And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.20 Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Is it thou, Asahel? And he answered, It is I.21 And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armor. But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.22 And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?23 Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
24 But Joab and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.25 And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill.26 Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?27 And Joab said, As God liveth, if thou hadst not spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone away, nor followed every one his brother.28 So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.29 And Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.
30 And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel.31 But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner’s men, so that three hundred and threescore men died.32 And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and the day brake upon them at Hebron.

A Hébron, David est consacré roi de Juda
1 Après ces événements, David consulta le Seigneur : « Dois-je me rendre dans une des villes de Juda ? » demanda-t-il. « Oui », répondit le Seigneur. « Dans laquelle ? » demanda encore David. « A Hébront », dit le Seigneur. 2 David s’y rendit, accompagné de ses deux femmes, Ahinoam, de Jizréel, et Abigaïl, veuve de Nabal, de Karmelt. 3 Il emmena également ses compagnons et leurs familles, qui s’installèrent dans les localités voisines d’Hébron.
4 Alors les gens de Juda vinrent à Hébron pour y consacrer David roi de Juda.
Lorsqu’on informa David que les habitants de Yabech, en Galaadt, avaient enterré Saül, 5 il envoya des messagers leur dire : « Que le Seigneur vous bénisse d’avoir enterré Saül votre maître et d’avoir montré un tel attachement à son égard. 6 Que le Seigneur à son tour vous traite avec bonté et fidélité. Quant à moi, je vous ferai aussi du bien, puisque vous avez agi ainsi.
7 Et maintenant, reprenez courage, soyez des hommes résolus. Votre maître Saül est mort, et c’est moi que les gens de Juda ont consacré pour que je règne sur eux. »Ichebaal désigné comme roi d’Israël
8 Abner, fils de Ner, le général en chef de Saül, avait emmené Ichebaal, fils de Saül, à Mahanaïmt. 9 Là, il l’avait proclamé roi pour les régions de Galaad, d’Assert, de Jizréel, d’Éfraïm et de Benjamin, bref pour tout Israël. 10 Ichebaal avait quarante ans lorsqu’il devint roi d’Israël, et il régna deux ans. Seule la tribu de Juda reconnut l’autorité de David.
11 Celui-ci régna sur Juda, à Hébron, durant sept ans et demi.Bataille entre Juda et Israël à Gabaon
12 Abner, fils de Ner, et la garde d’Ichebaal, fils de Saül, quittèrent Mahanaïm et prirent la direction de Gabaont. 13 Joab, dont la mère s’appelait Serouia, et la garde de David se mirent aussi en route. Les deux troupes se rencontrèrent près du réservoir de Gabaon et prirent position de part et d’autre de ce réservoir. 14 Abner dit à Joab : « Je propose que nos jeunes soldats luttent en combat singulier devant nous. » – « D’accord », répondit Joab. 15 Des soldats s’avancèrent ; on en compta douze de la tribu de Benjamin, représentant Ichebaal, et douze de la garde de David.
16 Chaque soldat saisit son adversaire par la tête et lui planta son épée dans le côté, de sorte qu’ils tombèrent tous ensemble. On appela cet endroit de Gabaon le Champ des Rocherst.
17 Le même jour, un combat extrêmement violent éclata. Abner et ses hommes furent battus par la garde de David. 18 Joab, Abichaï et Assaël, dont la mère s’appelait Serouia, étaient présents. Assaël, qui était aussi léger et rapide qu’une gazelle sauvage, 19 se mit à poursuivre Abner, sans dévier ni à droite ni à gauche. 20 Abner, tournant la tête, demanda : « Est-ce bien toi, Assaël ? » – « Oui, c’est bien moi », répondit-il. 21 « Poursuis quelqu’un d’autre, à droite ou à gauche, lui dit Abner. Essaie d’attraper l’un des jeunes soldats et de t’emparer de son équipement. » Mais Assaël ne voulut pas cesser de poursuivre Abner. 22 Celui-ci reprit : « Assaël, cesse de me poursuivre ! Pourquoi m’obliger à te tuer ? Ensuite je ne pourrais plus regarder ton frère Joab en face. »
23 Assaël refusa pourtant de changer de direction. Alors Abner le frappa en plein ventre avec l’extrémité de sa lance ; celle-ci ressortit dans le dos d’Assaël, qui s’affaissa et mourut sur place. Tous ceux qui arrivèrent à l’endroit où gisait Assaël s’arrêtèrent.
24 Alors Joab et Abichaï se lancèrent à la poursuite d’Abner. Le soleil se couchait lorsqu’ils arrivèrent à Guibéa-Amma, à l’est de Guiat sur le chemin du désert de Gabaon. 25 Les soldats benjaminites se groupèrent en rangs serrés auprès d’Abner, et occupèrent le sommet d’une colline. 26 Abner interpella Joab : « Allons-nous sans fin brandir l’épée pour nous exterminer ? Ne comprends-tu pas que cette affaire finira tristement ? Qu’attends-tu donc pour ordonner à tes soldats d’arrêter cette poursuite fratricide ? » –
27 « Par le Dieu vivant, s’écria Joab, je t’assure que si tu n’avais pas demandé cet arrêt, mes hommes n’auraient pas cessé de vous poursuivre avant demain matin. »
28 Joab fit sonner de la trompette. Ses soldats cessèrent de poursuivre les Israélites et mirent fin au combat. 29 Abner et ses hommes cheminèrent toute cette nuit-là dans la vallée du Jourdain, puis franchirent le fleuve, traversèrent tout le Bitron et arrivèrent à Mahanaïmt. 30 Joab, ayant cessé de poursuivre Abner, rassembla sa troupe. Seuls dix-neuf soldats de la garde de David manquaient à l’appel, en plus d’Assaël. 31 Par contre, la garde de David avait frappé à mort trois cent soixante Benjaminites et autres soldats d’Abner. 32 On emporta le corps d’Assaël et on le déposa dans le tombeau de son père à Bethléem. Ensuite Joab et ses hommes marchèrent toute la nuit et atteignirent Hébron au lever du jour.
