2 Samuel 23

1 Now these are the last words of David. David the son of Jesse saith, And the man who was raised on high saith, The anointed of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel:

2 The Spirit of Jehovah spake by me, And his word was upon my tongue.

3 The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spake to me: One that ruleth over men righteously, That ruleth in the fear of God,

4  He shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, A morning without clouds, When the tender grass springeth out of the earth, Through clear shining after rain.

5 Verily my house is not so with God; Yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, Ordered in all things, and sure: For it is all my salvation, and all my desire, Although he maketh it not to grow.

6 But the ungodly shall be all of them as thorns to be thrust away, Because they cannot be taken with the hand;

7 But the man that toucheth them Must be armed with iron and the staff of a spear: And they shall be utterly burned with fire in their place.

8 These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb-basshebeth a Tahchemonite, chief of the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite, against eight hundred slain at one time.

9 And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodai the son of an Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away.10 He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword; and Jehovah wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to take spoil.

11 And after him was Shammah the son of Agee a Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the people fled from the Philistines.12 But he stood in the midst of the plot, and defended it, and slew the Philistines; and Jehovah wrought a great victory.

13 And three of the thirty chief men went down, and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of Adullam; and the troop of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Rephaim.14 And David was then in the stronghold; and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Beth-lehem.15 And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me water to drink of the well of Beth-lehem, which is by the gate!16 And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto Jehovah.17 And he said, Be it far from me, O Jehovah, that I should do this: shall I drink the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.

18 And Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the three. And he lifted up his spear against three hundred and slew them, and had a name among the three.19 Was he not most honorable of the three? therefore he was made their captain: howbeit he attained not unto the first three.

20 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done mighty deeds, he slew the two sons of Ariel of Moab: he went down also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow.21 And he slew an Egyptian, a goodly man: and the Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and slew him with his own spear.22 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had a name among the three mighty men.23 He was more honorable than the thirty, but he attained not to the first three. And David set him over his guard.

24 Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; Elhanan the son of Dodo of Beth-lehem,25 Shammah the Harodite, Elika the Harodite,26 Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite,27 Abiezer the Anathothite, Mebunnai the Hushathite,28 Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai the Netophathite,29 Heleb the son of Baanah the Netophathite, Ittai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the children of Benjamin,30 Benaiah a Pirathonite, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash.31 Abialbon the Arbathite, Azmaveth the Barhumite,32 Eliahba the Shaalbonite, the sons of Jashen, Jonathan,33 Shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Ararite,34 Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maacathite, Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite,35 Hezro the Carmelite, Paarai the Arbite,36 Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani the Gadite,37 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, armorbearers to Joab the son of Zeruiah,38 Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite,39 Uriah the Hittite: thirty and seven in all.

1 Voici les dernières déclarations de David :
Écoutez les paroles de David, fils de Jessé,
les paroles de l’homme souverainement élevé,
que le Dieu de Jacob a choisi comme roi
et que le peuple d’Israël se plaît à chantert :

2 L’Esprit du Seigneur s’exprime par moi,
il place sa parole sur ma langue.

3 Le Dieu d’Israël a parlé,
le protecteur d’Israël m’a déclaré :
« Le roi qui gouverne les hommes avec justice
et se soumet à Dieu pour les diriger

4 est pareil au soleil qui se lève, lumineux,
dans un ciel matinal sans nuage.
A la chaleur de ses rayons, après la pluie,
la verdure sort de terre. »

5 Voici comment Dieu agit avec ma famille :
il a conclu avec moi une alliance perpétuelle,
fixée par des règles qui la préserventt.
En toute occasion, il m’assure la victoire,
il réalise mes désirs.

6 Mais tous ceux qui méprisent Dieu
sont comme des branches épineuses qu’on élimine.
On ne les empoigne pas à main nue ;

7 celui qui veut y toucher s’arme d’un crochet de fer
ou d’un bois de lance, et brûle tout sur placet.

Les guerriers de David

(Voir 1 Chron 11.10-47)

8 Voici la liste des plus vaillants guerriers de Davidt :
Ichebaal, le Hakmonite, qui appartenait à l’élite de la garde ; on l’appelait aussi Adino l’Esnite, et c’est lui qui fit huit cents victimes en une seule fois.
9 Vient ensuiteÉlazar, fils de Dodo et petit-fils d’un homme d’Ahoa. Il était l’un des trois guerriers accompagnant David, lorsqu’ils défièrent les Philistinst rassemblés pour le combat ; l’armée d’Israël battit en retraite,

10 mais Élazar tint ferme et tua des Philistins jusqu’à ce que sa main se crispe de fatigue sur la poignée de son épée. Le Seigneur accorda ce jour-là une éclatante victoire à Israël ; l’armée ne revint auprès d’Élazar que pour dépouiller les victimes.
11 Vient ensuiteChamma, fils d’Agué, de Harar. Lorsque les Philistins se rassemblèrent à Léhi, où se trouvait un champ de lentilles, l’armée d’Israël prit la fuite devant eux ;

12 mais Chamma se posta au milieu du champ, le dégagea et battit les Philistins. Le Seigneur accorda ainsi une éclatante victoire à Israël.
13 Un jour, au temps de la moisson, trois membres de l’élite de la garde vinrent trouver David à la caverne d’Adoullam, car une troupe de Philistins campait dans la vallée des Refaïtest. 14 David était dans son refuge fortifié, et un groupe de Philistins occupait Bethléem. 15 David, pris d’un désir soudain, demanda : « Qui m’apportera à boire de l’eau provenant de la citerne située à la porte de Bethléem ? » 16 Alors les trois guerriers firent irruption dans le camp philistin, puisèrent de l’eau dans la citerne, l’emportèrent et la présentèrent à David. Mais lui ne voulut pas la boire ; il l’offrit au Seigneur en la versant sur le sol,

17 et il déclara : « Je n’ai pas le droit, Seigneur, de boire cette eau ! N’est-elle pas comme le sang même des hommes qui sont allés la chercher, au péril de leur vie ? » Il refusa donc de la boire.
Tel fut l’exploit de ces trois guerriers.
18  Abichaï, frère de Joab et dont la mère s’appelait Serouia, appartenait à l’élite de la garde. C’est lui qui, un jour, brandit sa lance contre trois cents adversaires et les tua. Il acquit une renommée semblable à celle du “groupe des Trois” ;

19 il fut l’un des plus célèbres du “groupe des Trente”, et devint même leur chef, mais il ne fit pas partie du “groupe des Trois”.
20  Benaya, de Cabséel, fils de Yoyada, lequel était un vaillant soldat, accomplit de nombreux exploits. C’est lui qui tua les deux Arielt de Moab ; lui aussi qui, un jour où il neigeait, descendit dans une citerne pour y tuer un lion. 21 C’est lui encore qui tua un imposant Égyptien armé d’une lance : il l’attaqua avec un bâton, lui arracha la lance de la main et s’en servit pour le tuer. 22 Tels furent les exploits de Benaya, qui acquit une renommée semblable à celle du groupe des trois guerriers.

23 Il fut l’un des plus célèbres du “groupe des Trente”, mais il ne fit pas partie du “groupe des Trois”. David lui confia le commandement de la garde royale.
24 Le “groupe des Trente” comprenait aussi :Assaël, frère de Joab,Élanan, fils de Dodo, de Bethléem, 25 Chamma, de Harod,Élica, de Harod, 26 Hélès, de Péleth,Ira, fils d’Iquèch, de Técoa, 27 Abiézer, d’Anatoth,Mebounnaï, de Houcha, 28 Salmon, d’Ahoa,Maraï de Netofa, 29 Héleb, fils de Baana, de Netofa,Ittaï, fils de Ribaï, de Guibéa, dans le territoire de Benjamin, 30 Benaya, de Piraton,Hiddaï, des torrents de Gaach, 31 Abialbon, de Beth-Araba,Azmaveth, de Bahourim, 32 Éliaba, de Chaalbon, un des fils de Yachen,Yonatant, 33 Chamma, de Harar,Ahiam, fils de Charar, de Harar, 34 Éliféleth, fils d’Ahasbaï et petit-fils d’un homme de Maaka,Éliam, fils d’Ahitofel, de Guilo, 35 Hesraï, de Karmel,Paaraï, d’Arab, 36 Igal, fils de Natan, de Soba,Bani, de la tribu de Gad, 37 Sélec, l’Ammonite,Naraï, de Beéroth, porteur d’armes de Joab, dont la mère s’appelait Serouia, 38 Ira, de la famille de Yéter,Gareb, de la même famille, 39 etUrie, le Hittite. Au total, ils étaient trente-sept.
