3 John 1
1 The elder unto Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth.2 Beloved, I pray that in all things thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.3 For I rejoiced greatly, when brethren came and bare witness unto thy truth, even as thou walkest in truth.4 Greater joy have I none than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.5 Beloved, thou doest a faithful work in whatsoever thou doest toward them that are brethren and strangers withal;6 who bare witness to thy love before the church: whom thou wilt do well to set forward on their journey worthily of God:7 because that for the sake of the Name they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.8 We therefore ought to welcome such, that we may be fellow-workers for the truth.9 I wrote somewhat unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.10 Therefore, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his works which he doeth, prating against us with wicked words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and them that would he forbiddeth and casteth them out of the church.11 Beloved, imitate not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: he that doeth evil hath not seen God.12 Demetrius hath the witness of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, we also bear witness: and thou knowest that our witness is true.13 I had many things to write unto thee, but I am unwilling to write them to thee with ink and pen:14 but I hope shortly to see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Salutation
1 De la part de l’Ancien, à mon cher Gaïust que j’aime en toute vérité.
2 Cher ami, je souhaite que tout aille bien pour toi et que tu sois en aussi bonne santé physiquement que tu l’es spirituellement. 3 Des frères sont arrivés et m’ont déclaré combien tu es fidèle à la vérité, et comment tu vis selon la vérité. J’en ai été très heureux.
4 Rien ne me rend plus heureux que d’apprendre que mes enfants vivent conformément à la vérité.La fidélité de Gaïus
5 Cher ami, tu te montres fidèle dans tout ce que tu fais pour les frères, même étrangers. 6 Ils ont témoigné de ton amour devant notre Égliset. Aide-les, je t’en prie, à poursuivre leur voyage, d’une manière digne de Dieu. 7 En effet, ils se sont mis en route au service du Christ sans rien accepter des païens.
8 Nous avons donc le devoir de soutenir de tels hommes, afin de collaborer, nous aussi, à la diffusion de la vérité.Diotrèphe et Démétrius
9 J’ai écrit une courte lettre à votre Égliset ; mais Diotrèphe, qui aime à tout diriger, ne tient aucun compte de ce que je dis.
10 C’est pourquoi, quand je viendrai, je dénoncerai le mal qu’il commet, lui qui profère des propos malveillants et mensongers à notre sujet. Mais ce n’est pas tout : il refuse de recevoir les frères de passage, et ceux qui voudraient les recevoir, il les en empêche en les menaçant de les chasser de l’Église.
11 Cher ami, n’imite pas ce qui est mal, mais ce qui est bien. Celui qui pratique le bien appartient à Dieu ; celui qui commet le mal ne connaît pas Dieu.
12 Tous disent du bien de Démétrius, et la vérité qui l’inspire témoigne en sa faveur. Nous aussi, nous lui rendons un bon témoignage, et tu sais que ce témoignage est vrai.Salutations finales
