Acts 1

1 The former treatise I made, O Theophilus, concerning all that Jesus began both to do and to teach,2 until the day in which he was received up, after that he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit unto the apostles whom he had chosen:3 To whom he also showed himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing unto them by the space of forty days, and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God:4 and, being assembled together with them, he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, said he, ye heard from me:5 For John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days hence.6 They therefore, when they were come together, asked him, saying, Lord, dost thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know times or seasons, which the Father hath set within His own authority.8 But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.10 And while they were looking stedfastly into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;11 who also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye looking into heaven? this Jesus, who was received up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as ye beheld him going into heaven.12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is nigh unto Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey off.13 And when they were come in, they went up into the upper chamber, where they were abiding; both Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.14 These all with one accord continued stedfastly in prayer, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.15 And in these days Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren, and said (and there was a multitude of persons gathered together, about a hundred and twenty),16 Brethren, it was needful that the Scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spake before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was guide to them that took Jesus.17 For he was numbered among us, and received his portion in this ministry.18 (Now this man obtained a field with the reward of his iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.19 And it became known to all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch that in their language that field was called Akeldama, that is, The field of blood.)20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be made desolate, And let no man dwell therein: and, His office let another take.

21 Of the men therefore that have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and went out among us,22 beginning from the baptism of John, unto the day that he was received up from us, of these must one become a witness with us of his resurrection.23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show of these two the one whom thou hast chosen,25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place.26 And they gave lots for them; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Le Saint-Esprit promis aux apôtres

1 Cher Théophile,
Dans mon premier livret j’ai raconté tout ce que Jésus a fait et enseigné dès le début 2 jusqu’au jour où il fut enlevé au ciel. Avant d’y monter, il donna ses instructions, par la puissance du Saint-Esprit, à ceux qu’il avait choisis comme apôtrest. 3 En effet, après sa mort, c’est à eux qu’il se montra en leur prouvant de bien des manières qu’il était vivant : pendant quarante jours, il leur apparut et leur parla du Royaume de Dieu. 4 Un jour qu’il prenait un repas avec eux, il leur donna cet ordre : « Ne vous éloignez pas de Jérusalem, mais attendez ce que le Père a promis, le don que je vous ai annoncét.

5 Car Jean a baptisé avec de l’eau, mais vous, dans peu de jours, vous serez baptisés avec le Saint-Espritt. »

Jésus monte au ciel

6 Ceux qui étaient réunis auprès de Jésus lui demandèrent alors : « Seigneur, est-ce en ce temps-ci que tu rétabliras le royaume d’Israëlt ? »
7 Jésus leur répondit : « Il ne vous appartient pas de savoir quand viendront les temps et les moments, car le Père les a fixés de sa seule autoritét. 8 Mais vous recevrez une force quand le Saint-Esprit descendra sur vous. Vous serez alors mes témoins à Jérusalem, dans toute la Judée et la Samarie, et jusqu’au bout du mondet. » 9 Après ces mots, Jésus s’éleva vers le ciel pendant que tous le regardaient ; puis un nuage le cacha à leurs yeuxt. 10 Ils avaient encore les regards fixés vers le ciel où Jésus s’élevait, quand deux hommes habillés en blanct se trouvèrent tout à coup près d’eux

11 et leur dirent : « Hommes de Galilée, pourquoi restez-vous là à regarder le ciel ? Ce Jésus, qui vous a été enlevé pour aller au ciel, reviendra de la même manière que vous l’avez vu y partir. »

Le successeur de Judas

14 Tous ensemble ils se réunissaient régulièrement pour prier, avec les femmes, avec Marie la mère de Jésus, et avec les frères de Jésus.
15 Un de ces jours-là, les croyants réunis étaient au nombre d’environ cent vingt. Pierre se leva au milieu d’eux et leur dit : 16 « Frères, il fallait que se réalise ce que le Saint-Esprit a annoncé dans l’Écriture : s’exprimant par l’intermédiaire de David, il y a parlé d’avance de Judast, devenu le guide de ceux qui arrêtèrent Jésus. 17 Judas était l’un d’entre nous et il avait reçu sa part de notre mission. 18 – Avec l’argent qu’on lui paya pour son crime, cet homme s’acheta un champ ; il y tomba la tête la première, son corps éclata par le milieu et tous ses intestins se répandirent. 19 Les habitants de Jérusalem ont appris ce fait, de sorte qu’ils ont appelé ce champ, dans leur langue, “Hakeldama”, c’est-à-dire “champ du sangt”. –

20 Or, voici ce qui est écrit dans le livre des Psaumes :
“Que sa maison soit abandonnée,
et que personne n’y habite.”
Et il est encore écrit :
“Qu’un autre prenne ses fonctionst.”

21-22 Il faut donc qu’un homme se joigne à nous pour témoigner de la résurrection du Seigneur Jésus. Cet homme doit être l’un de ceux qui nous ont accompagnés tout le temps que le Seigneur Jésus a parcouru le pays avec nous, à partir du moment où Jean l’a baptisé jusqu’au jour où il nous a été enlevé pour aller au cielt. »
23 On proposa alors deux hommes : Joseph, appelé Barsabbas, surnommé aussi Justus, et Matthias. 24 Puis l’assemblée fit cette prière : « Seigneur, toi qui connais le cœur de tous, montre-nous lequel de ces deux tu as choisi 25 pour occuper, dans cette fonction d’apôtre, la place que Judas a quittée pour aller à celle qui lui revient. » 26 Ils tirèrent alors au sort et le sort désigna Matthias, qui fut donc associé aux onze apôtres.
